NU enters weekend
with new lineup

The Nebraska men’s tennis team
may have finally found what it needed
to accomplish me of its main goals of
the season.

Texas A&M. Against the Aggies, the
Huskers took a 1-0 lead by winning
two of the three doubles matches.
Dinko Verzi and Markus Bergerheim
were the only two to earn singles wins.
“We put ourselves in a position to
win against a Top 50 school,” Coach
Kerry McDermott said. “I feel we are
getting there. The guys are getting the
confidence we can play with those
teams.”
Verzi and Bergerheim also helped
Nebraska capture third place in the
Califomia-Irvine Invitational. NU
opened with a 6-1 win over Northern
Arizona and after dropping a 6-1 de
cision to the host Anteaters, the Husk
ers won a dual against DePaul to fin
ish third. NU also beat Missouri 7-0
on March 30.
“Markus and Dinko have been
consistent all year,” McDermott said.
“I wish we could have done a little
better, but I am pleased the guys did
that well.”

NU notched four out of a possible
six wins in the UCI Invite at the No. 5
and 6 spots. Todd Nicholl and Andrew
Wiese have also been teamed at the
No. 3 doubles spot. The duo has gone
4-1 since the switch was made before
the Tbxas A&M match.
This puts the Huskers into good
position heading into the final six
matches of the season.
NU has three important regional
matches: with Kansas, Colorado and
Wichita State this weekend. Wins
against any or all of these teams will
give Nebraska momentum heading
into the Big 12 Conference meet April
24 through 26 at Austin, Tbxas.
“We will have to win at least two
out of the last five matches to make
something happen fa- us,” McDermott
said. “We are not walking in with our
eyes closed.”
NU closes out theseason with five
of its six duals at home, including
matches with CU and WSU this week
end. McDermott said a home-court
advantage is a huge plus for the team.
“The guys love playing at home,”
McDermott said. “We are in the thick
of that group. It will be a dog fight.”

One thing that is not bothering
Lizama, who is leading the team
in hitting, is the move in the field.
She is averaging .337 and leads the
team with 19 runs scored.
~“I played shortstop in high
school. In fact, since I started play
ing softball when I was 9,1 have
always played shortstop,” Lizama
said. “It wasn't until I got here that
I played second.”
Lizama said she is willing to do
whatever is best for the team when
Revelle asked her to move to short
stop.
Revelle said Brewer has been a
pleasant surprise with the poise and
courage she has shown since being
used as a full-time player.
