The following excerpts are taken from stories that ran in the Jan 22-23,1976, editions of the Daily Nebraskan. For the full versions, please see the DN’s website at UFO disciples still wait for saucer ascension By Ann Owens and George Miller © Daily Nebraskan 1976 Between 15 and 20 people left their possessions in Waldport, Ore., in Oc tober 1975 to join a sect of Unidenti fied Flying Object (UFO) evangelists. In August, two University of Northern Iowa graduates and a 20 year-old Kearney woman disappeared reportedly for the same reason. Only the Kearney woman remains with the group. Tonight, three underground fol lowers, often referred to as “space fe tuses,” will “pass the faith” to a Lin coln audience. The movement began last spring when a man and woman calling them selves Bo and Peep signed up the first 26 disciples in their design for heav enly ascension. Three newer followers, a woman who goes by the name “Hickory,” and two men who go by “Tuna” and “Reach” will hold a public meeting at 7 p.m. in the UMHE Commonplace Chapel, 333 N. 14th St. They will ask people to give up worldly possessions and sex and join them in a search for “the second level,” Tuna said. Tuna said human existence is based on many levels with each suc cessive level being nearer to the ulti mate paradise. By breaking all possible ties with the earthly level of existence, it is pos sible to enter what Tuna called the second level. Sacrifice However, neither Hickory, Reach nor Tuna has sacrificed cars, money or watching television, they said. Sacrificing possessions is only a guideline set by Bo and Peep, they said. Reach, apparently the spokesman for the three, said he was a common worker before he was recruited at a meeting in Boulder, Colo. Children abandoned Hickory did not reveal her previ ous occupation. At the meeting in Waldport, people left behind not only names, identities and homes, but even children. After the Waldport meeting, one couple gave their 2-year-old daughter and 14-month-old son to a friend. According to Reach, giving away one’s child is in the child’s best inter est. “When the child’s parents enter the second level, they can help all man kind by showing it ‘the truth,”’ Reach said. Before anyone reaches the second level “the two,” as they call Bo and Peep, must be assassinated by some Space Fetuses’ tell of new life George Miller © Daily Nebraskan 1976 To be taken up to the “higher level” of existence, a human must give all of his energy and “give up all of your possessions and emo tional attachments” including his family. This was the message delivered to about 100 people Thursday night by two “space fetuses” at the UMHE Commonplace Chapel, 15 of whom gave them their telephone numbers so they could be contacted and given more information. Calling their message “the most important thing that's happened in 2,000 years,” Reach said a person can go through “a natural meta morphosis” and can “change into a totally new life, free from all hu man activities and hangups.” Reach said at the time of meta morphosis, a body is “chemically and biologically changed into a new creature.” The two said the Earth currently is growing. Reach said “light” or “special dispensation” has been shining on the Earth for approxi mately 10 to 12 years. He said this light has “accelerated all life cm the planet.” one who is against the cause, Reach said. To make a total impact, they should be assassinated in public, Reach said. In three days, he said, their bodies will be resurrected. After the resurrection, all the faith ful will be spirited away to the second level “without tasting death,” Reach said. Bo and Peep not messiahs Bo and Peep have been avoiding public meetings, but Tuna and Reach r -——- ... ■ . _ , . .. .. . J contend they are not trying to avoid assassination. “They want to discourage people from worshipping them instead of God,” Tuna said. Tuna added that Bo and Peep “do purport to be Christ; These people aren’t doing miracles, rather spread ing the message of Christ.” At the end of this level, all follow ers will be picked up by what looks like a UFO, and whisked away to the second level, according to Tima. Reach said atheists will cease to exist at the end of this level.
