Jazz band uses its music to help others deal with death By Bret Schulte Staff Reporter Death frequently brings people together, and now a Lincoln quartet has brought together a variety of rituals that express the grief and mys tery of death. In a multimedia celebration, improvisational jazz group Howloosenation has assembled “An Ecumenical Requiem,” a performance utilizing music, dance, projected video and more. Mark Baldridge, a founding member of Howloosenation, said the group had assembled a nondenominational presentation encompass ing an array of death rituals from a variety of cultures and beliefs. “We thought it was a shame that people of different beliefs couldn’t get together to share their feelings and experiences about death,” he said. “An Ecumenical Requiem” involves music and customs inspired by Tibetan Buddhist cer emonies, the Latin Mass and Jewish funerary customs, specifically the placing of stones on the loved one’s grave. The presentation is inspired by the univer sality of death, an experience that transcends borders, beliefs and culture. “Not everyone has drunk a beer, not every one has had sex,” Baldridge said. “But no mat ter what you believe about (the afterlife), you have to believe that death is real, that it’s immi nent.” About five years ago, the seeds of Howloosenation were sown by member Fred Mausolf, who began to sponsor gatherings called New Music Group in his home. Initially a drum and percussion circle, the meetings expanded to become an epicenter of local cultural activity including painting, sculp ture, poetry and swig. From this artistic activity Baldridge, Mausolf, Ed Rumbaugh and Craig Imig formed their own avant-garde jazz impro visational group. “We do mostly 10-minute pieces; sometimes it sounds like chaos or the most beautiful mu sic,” he said. “I call it jazz noise. It comes in waves. Sometimes it sounds like a construction site and all of a sudden you’re hearing music.” Their newest composition, “An Ecumenical Requiem,” is divided into four pieces involving sets of percussion and wind; theramin dancing, featuring two dancers whose movements deter mine the sound produced by the instrument; a piano solo; and the Requiem itself. The presentation will be tonight and Satur day night at 8 at the Seventh Street Loft, 504 S. Seventh St. Tickets are $8, and the show will last about an hour and a half. $3.25 per day for 15 words on individual student and student organization ads. $4.50 par day for 15 words on non-student ads. $.15 each additional word. $.75 billing charge._ CLERICAL ASSISTANT Isco, Inc., a manufacturing firm, has an immediate open ing for a part time Clerical Assistant to support the Sales department staff by handling fax communications, tran scribing written correspondence from dictation, compos ing and routing correspondence, and filing and mailing duties.
