Bloodhound Gang ‘blew the lid off’ Ranch Bowl concert
By Chris Thomas
and Pat Miner
Music Critics
“Motherf***in’ dang, it’s the
Bloodhound Gang.”
This was the chant, led by Nerf
Herder lead singer and guitarist Parry
Gripp, that filled the Ranch Bowl be
fore the Bloodhound Gang took the
stage there Friday night.
22 Jacks opened the show with a
couple of sub-par songs off their de
but album. The lead singer belted out
the lyrics at the top of his lungs while
urging the uncooperative teen-age
crowd to jump to the music. 22 Jacks’
set was rather predictable, with the
exception of a charged cover of the
Police song “Message in a Bottle.” For
the most part, this band put a lot of
energy into its set, but the unexcitable
crowd put a damper on its efforts.
Nerf Herder, a trio from Santa Bar
bara, Calif., soon took the stage with
“Down on Haley,” the first track from
its self-titled debut release.
Despite more satirical lyrics, the
band’s sound has drawn numerous
references to Weezer, a comparison
Gripp definitely doesn’t mind. The
band’s humor showed through on such
songs as “Van Halen,” where Gripp
sings about the new addition of
Sammy Hagar to one of his previously
favorite bands.
The tempo of the set slowed down
when Nerf Herder played “Nosering
Girl,” a track that warranted the un
veiling of the crowd’s cigarette lighter
collection. Hie band soon flowed into
its current single, “Sorry,” a song that
was originally meant to be an inno
cent love poem but soon became a hi
larious staple to its shows.
The band finished with
“Golfshirt,” a guitar-driven track that
closed its set in excellent fashion, and
was a good contrast to the rap-centered
Bloodhound Gang that was soon to
follow.
With Spanky G on drums and DJ
Q-Ball working his turntable into a
Beck remix, Evil Jerod, Lupus and
Jimmy Pop Ali took stage. The
“Where it’s At” scratch-up gave the
Bloodhound Gang a perfect segue to
tear into its first cut, “Kiss Me Where
It Smells Funny.”
In the words of David Letterman,
bloodhound Gang “blew the lid off
that dump,” with all its staple songs
firom “One Fierce Beer Coaster,” in
cluding “I Wish I Was Queer So I
Could Get Chicks,” “Fire Water Bum”
and “Why’s Everybody Always
Pickin’ On Me,” which also will be
its next single.
Its set list included a faster-tempo
“Your Only Friends Are Make Be
lieve” and “You’re Pretty When I’m
Drunk,” a song from its previous al
bum “Use Your Fingers.” The fact that
it was an early show unfortunately cut
its set list short, leaving out several
covers and a remake of the theme from
“Kids Incorporated.”
This group of guys has been to
gether for about a year and a half,
while the Bloodhound Gang itself
dates back four years to Philadelphia.
Just like its music, the band is trapped
in the quicksand of sarcasm, an atti
tude that transfers from the recording
studio to the stage to backstage.
“We’re crazy dope addicts,”
quipped lead guitarist Lupus.
When asked to describe the band’s
sound, Q-Ball responded with flavor:
“Rap, rap, rap provocative,” an origi
nal remix.
The band said between Jerod’s al
coholism and Spanky G’s pot habit it
wonders how it gets anything done.
