‘Seinfeld’ leads pack at SAG Awards
LOS ANGELES (AP)—The cast
of “Seinfeld” was named best en
semble in a TV comedy Saturday and
the show’s Julia Louis-Dreyfus won a
best actress honor as the Screen Ac
tors Guild saluted the best of televi
sion and film.
“My name is Jerry Seinfeld, and I
am a bad actor,” the show’s namesake
said in accepting the ensemble award.
“But I think I have proven convinc
ingly that you can do very well in our
business if you are smart enough to
surround yourself with these spectacu
lar talents that I have here beside me.”
In film, Geoffrey Rush of “Shine”
and Frances McDormand of “Fargo”
won best actor and best actress, respec
tively, for their roles in the two inde
pendent movies.
“Two of my goals as an actor are
to confound expectations and to gain
the respect of my peers,” McDormand
said. “And if that’s what you’re tell
ing me tonight, thank you very much,
I’m very grateful.”
Rush, who portrayed eccentric pia
nist David Helfgott, said he felt as it
someone was about to wake him from
a dream: “To all of you guys, to be in
I---—
your company, 1 can t quite express
what that means.”
The third annual SAG awards
were determined by a vote of the
guild’s 86,000 members in five'film
categories and eight TV categories.
Along with the Golden Globes, they
are closely watched for hints of who
might win Academy Awards on March
24.
“Hie English Patient,” nominated
by the guild in four film categories,
didn’t win any.
“Seinfeld” led the television field
heading into the show but co-stars
Michael Richards and Jason
Alexander lost the best actor in a TV
comedy award to John Lithgow of “3rd
Rock from the Sun.”
As he accepted, Lithgow saluted
Richards, calling him “(me of the fun
niest men on television whom I am
shamelessly imitating about 50 per
cent of the time on '3rd Rock From
the Sun.’”
For the second year in a row, An
thony Edwards accepted the award for
outstanding cast in a drama series on
behalf of “ER” actors.
-1
Dennis rranz oi NYPD Blue
took home the best actor award in the
TV drama category.
“This gets a little overwhelming,
and I thank you so very, very much,”
Franz said, calling it “a blessing” to
work with fellow cast member Jimmy
Smits, who was also nominated in the
category.
Gillian Anderson was named best
actress in a drama for her role on “The
X-Files”
On the movie side, Cuba Gooding
Jn won a best supporting actor award
for his role in “Jerry Maguire” and
Lauren Bacall for her supporting per
formance in “The Mirror Has Two
Faces.” The actors from “The Bird
cage” won the best film cast award.
Alan Rickman won a best actor
award in a TV movie or miniseries for
“Rasputin.” Kathy Bates was named
best actress in a TV movie or
miniseries for “The Late Shift,” about
the late-night television wars.
Actress Angela Lansbury won a
SAG lifetime achievement award for
her longtime involvement with chari
ties.

adjustments in scene sequences, as
well as a few seconds of added foot
age. ...
Despite the media's focus on the
improvements of Cloud City, the
true strength of the doctored “Em
pire” lies on the “ice-cube” planet,
Hoth.
From the self-destructing Impe
rial probe droid to the Millennium
Falcon’s last-second escape from
the rebel base, Hoth resonates with
booming clarity, technological
gusto, and a more menacing Impe
rial invasion.
The first scene of significance
lies with Luke in the wampa cave.
The munching of the snowbeast as
it feasts on Luke’s tantan fills the
theater as Luke hangs from the
cave’s ceiling. The scene
progresses allowing the audience a
longer view of the bloody wampa.
Enhancing the special effects

for Lucas. He frequently accom
plished a wind-tunnel effect.
Although “The Empire Strikes
Back” is a favorite of many for ob
vious and numerous reasons, the
re-release of the film pales next to
the effort put into the original “Star
Wars.” However, the visually strik
ing and near-deafening Hoth se
quence, as well as the additional
footage of the touristy Cloud City
creates a bigger, better and indul
gently ominous “Empire.”

landish physical comedy, falling and
prancing with childish joy.
Cecily Smith, in the role of
Argon’s daughter, managed to evoke
some sympathy for her character’s
plight over the arranged marriage.
However, her obnoxious wailing of
ten distracted from the quips between
Hurst and McLaine.
Eric Harrell, as Cleante, Smith’s
suitor, exuded charm with his flam
boyant gestures and pouting. His per
formance in the “impromptu” opera
toward the end of Act 1 showcased his
comic talent.
Jeremy Stanbary also won some
laughs in his role as Thomas
Diafoirus, Smith’s betrothed. His quiv
ering lips and haughty stance con
trasted Harrell’s character well, but his
lines often seemed to be swallowed in
his attempt at gawkiness.
Act 2 lacked the momentum of Act
1 as Moliere waxed philosophic about
his views on the medical profession.
One of the few highlights was the
scene between Argon’s younger
daughter, played by Michelle Eckley,
and Hurst. From the moment she en
tered, Eckley matched the temper and
childishness of Hurst. Their comic fin
ger play provided a release from the
dry lines aimed at the hypocrisy of
doctors.
The men, clad in their cravats and
tights, provided a humorous contrast
to the less sophisticated tones of the
p!ay.
