Eastwood film sheer thriller, despite ending POWER from page 9 with his long-estranged daughter Kate (Laura Linney), and homicide detec tive Seth Frank (Ed Harris) isn’t con vinced Whitney is the murderer. The great thing about Eastwood directed films is the guarantee of the characters having depth to them. Eastwood avoids most of the potholes and pits commonly hit when making a thriller, and gives each of the char acters a bit of humanity and style. The best performances come from Harris as the ever-inquisitive detective who’s more interested in justice than politics, and Eastwood himself as the man who was just in the wrong place at the wrong time but decides to do the right thing. Disappointing is Hackman’s per formance* which is borderline cartQonisb at times, and also Davis, who seems to be the additional “comic relief’ of the film ... which doesn’t need it. Also, thrown in for no apparent reason is a subplot involving Brennan - bringing in a professional hit man. It was absolutely pointless and annoy ing (and the guy wasn’t even a good hit man). Thprkapp nfMAKcr)iute Power” goes ending sufficient Irama and humor Unfbr$unld€ly, Eastwood lets the last 20minutes of “Absolute Power” slip through Jhis fingers, and every thing ends tip being very anticlimac _tic. • > ." The film is definitely worth see ing; but you don’t have to beat down any doors to get there. 02 AsodancM <00 Roommates 05 Bicycles 410 Housing Wanted 10 Books ' 420 Rooms/Rent 13 Clothing 430 Houses/Rent IS Computers 440 Dupi**/R*nt 20 Furniture <50 Apsitments/Rent 30 Jewelry 460 Summer Housing • 40 Miec. The New Release shelves are flow ing with flicks perfect for the stu dent hip-deep in midterms, debt and various other mind-numbing projects. This week’s pick-of-the week won’t be easy to find, but it’s worth the extra work. “Solo” — Oooooh yeah! An other one of those “perfect cybersoldier-regains-humanity” flicks! Wasn’t “Universal Soldier” enough? Solo (Mario Van Peebles) is the perfect killing machine who goes against his programming and starts making decisions on his own (gasp!), so naturally he has to be eliminated. It’s a no-brainer. Perfect for this time of semester. “Last Man Standing” — Bruce Willis. Christopher Walken. Lots of bullets and explosions. Sounds like a party! John Smith (Willis) is a myste rious gunman who finds himself playing both sides of a 1930s mob war, eventually going head-to-head with vicious psycho Hickey (Walken). It may have ‘plotholes’ big enough for a Sherman tank, but it’s still no-brainer fun. PICK-OF-THE-WEEK—This Friday sees the opening of the re vamped version of “'Hie Empire Strikes Back,” one of the many big hits starring Harrison Ford. And, although “Force 10 From Navarone” wasn’t a blockbuster hit for Ford, it was still a cool wartime flick. A somewhat lame sequel to “The Guns of Navarone”—a clas sic on its own—this one has Ford as the captain of a crack squadron of soldiers sent to blow up a bridge to stop an invasion. The film also stars Carl Weathers, Robert Shaw (“Jaws”) and Edward Fox (“Never Say Never Again”). Check it out. Barbershop legend endures, grows in Lincoln BARBERS from page 9 you name it,” Haun said. -“It’s up to us to get it out.” Barbershops also can fulfill a more specific need than hacking out globs of crusted Kool-Aid residue. There are several shops in town that accomodate ethnic hair and hairstyles. Muhammad’s, 109 S. 27th St., is one of four Lincoln barbershops that specialize in cutting black men’s hair. “We deal with anyone with hair,” said James Muhammad, the shop’s owner and a University of Nebraska Lincoln graduate. “(But) I opened the store because there was a need for walk-in black barbershops.” His shop is not only the product of community need, but also of Muhammad’s firm religious beliefs in “My teacher stresses do-it-your self,” Muhammad said. “That was a big impact on the start of my busi ness.” , . He joined the Nation of Islam in 1993, and he opened the store soon after. He has enjoyed steady business since. He accredits some of his suc cess to the lack of qualified barber shops for black people. “A lot of white barbershops say they can cut Wack hair, but they can’t,” Muhammad said. After getting a bad haircut from his father as a youth, Muhammad began cutting his own hair. Soon his friends were asking who cut his hair, and eventually he was giving haircuts to friends and family. Muhammad now runs his store based on the principles of the Koran. was the result of each proprietor’s re spect for the tradition of the local bar bershop. “There is something about the nos talgia of the experience,” Haun said. “Something your father and grandfa ther may have experienced.” / .■- ■' ■-? . - “The store is clean and orderly, and no cursing or. eating is allowed,” Muhammad said. Despite each owner’s desire to run a successful business, the spirit of fierce competition is nowhere to be found among Lincoln’s more then 25 barbershops. Haun said that attitude u A lot of guys growing up went with their moms (for haircuts). Now they come to barbershops ... where a guy can say what he wants to say.” GahyHaun J baAer GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR CHEMISTRY MAJORS!
