He said some patients experienced pain and discomfort from the opera tion from two months to a year until the incision healed. In the Jan. 30 operation, the same kidney removal surgery was per formed, Gill said, but no muscle tissue was cut. Gill said he and Grune worked through the small incisions to separate muscle fibers instead. Using a laparoscope for kidney re moval makes surgery more difficult than a typical removal, he said. As a result, few hospitals currently perform the procedure. “It’s clearly harder to do,” he said. ‘You need special training for this.” But the procedure holds benefits In recovery time for the patient,Jie said. “As far as the patient is concerned, it’s definitely a much easier operation,” Gill said. The Omaha patient was released in good condition from Clarkson Hospi tal the following day, Gill said. He is on a dialysis machine, which does the kidneys’ job of filtering im purities from blood. He also is on a waiting list for a transplant but can re turn to work and other normal activi ties today, Gill said. Rodney Frizzell, who promotes 1Q3.7-FM,KXKT and 93.3-FM The Point radio stations in Omaha, said he also had two cancerous kidneys re moved in laparoscope surgery. Frizzell said he recovered quickly, returned to work in 10 days and was doing rigorous exercise in four to six weeks. His colleagues at the radio sta tions were surprised, he said. “They’re calling me superman over here,” Frizzell said. Frizzell said he now plans to par ticipate in the World Transplant Games this September in Sydney, Australia. He will compete in bicycle races and track and field events, he said. Because of his quick recovery time, Frizzell said he recommends the laparoscopic procedure to anyone who needs an organ removed. Although he said the nurses and doctors were great, the reduced hospital stay was impor tant. “Who likes to stay in the hospital?” Frizzell said. No one enjoys pain, either, he said. After his second kidney removal, he was off painkillers in two days. “It worked out really well,” Frizzell said. - Gill said the procedure was suc cessful for both patients. Not everyone is a candidate for the procedure, he said. But for some pa tients who require organ removal, Gill said, the result of laparoscopic re moval could be “beautiful.” Armed Robbery A man with a cap over his face robbed Payless ShoeSource, 2240 N. 48th St., Saturday night. ^ The man entered the store at 8:32 p.m. with a handgun and demanded money, Lincoln Police Capt.
