NU scrapes by UNI
UNI from page 9
■ V ’ • /' r_- .
The Panthers’ 6-3 guard, who scored
36 points in a 109-104 UNI win over
Nebraska last season, scored 27 on
Thursday, nearly leading a successful
second-half comeback.
After Daisy tied the game at 39
with a pair of free throws, NU pulled
away to leads of62-53 and 70-59 fol
lowing a lyronn Lue free throw with
4:05 to play in the game.
But Daisy scored six of the next
eight points and added an assist to
Sean Hawkins, cutting Nebraska’s
lead to 72-69 with 2:20 remaining.
Bemaid Garner hit a layup before two
traveling violations by Lue gave UNI
another chance.
The Panthers, who shot just 33
percent from the field, failed to con
vert in the final 90 seconds, instead
sending Lue and Cookie Belcher to the
free-throw line, where the Husker
guards iced the game.
Lue scored 15 points in 33 min
utes, a welcome change for the sopho
i
more point guard, who had grown
used to playing 37 to 40 minutes each
night out.
“Everyone wasn’t just standing
around and watching me,” Lue said.
“Everyone got involved.” %
Garner added 21 points, Belcher
scored eight, Andy Markowski con
tributed seven points and Larry Flo
rence had six.
“We played a lot better tonight,”
Markowski said. “We did the things
we needed to do to win. Everybody’s
relieved to get the win. It feels good, a
lot better than going home every night
with a loss.”
But with a 4-7 conference record
heading into Sunday’s showdown with
the Longhorns, Gamer said, Nebraska
can’t consider relaxing after
Thursday’s 23-tumover showing.
“We played well at times,” Gamer
said, “but we got a little sloppy. We’ve
still got to improve and be consistent
in order to be a good basketball team,
and if we’re going to reach our goals,
we have to win the rest of our games.”
Longhorns need wins
PENDERS from page 9
rections. Texas has won three straight
while
NU has lost six of its last eight.
“We are going to be overconfident af
ter that two-point overtime blowout,”
Penders joked. “I felt very fortunate
to escape with that one. It was too
tough of an opener for both of us.”
Texas is coming off three straight
victories, which includes a 76-73 win
against Baylor on Wednesday. As of
late, Penders said UT’s play has im
proved, but a wounded team like the
Huskers still concerns him.
“My thoughts are just about the
some as they were before the first
game,” Penders said. “They are very
athletic and have a combo of experi
ence and youth.
“lyronn Lue is one of the best
point guards in the country.”
The Longhorns counter with All
America candidate Reggie Freeman
and center Dennis Jordan. Penders
said
Freeman, a 6-foot-6 senior guard,
is scoring 24 points per game while
playing nearly 39 minutes. Jordan, a
6-9 senior, is averaging 6 points per
game while grabbing 4.2 rebounds.
Texas has been a two-faced team
on the road this season. The Long
horns blew a nine-point lead at Ari
zona losing 83-78 and were beaten 83
69 at Oklahoma. Against Oklahoma
State, Tbxas handed the Cowboys their
worst home defeat (90-73) in Eddie
Sutton’s tenure.
“It is a lot easier to play and win at
home,” Penders said. “The kids know
the situation. You can go in feeling
youhave a good chance or having two
chances — slim and none.”
NU gymnasts
face Ohio State
From Staff Reports
The Nebraska men’s gymnas

Ohio, Saturday night to take on
top-ranked Ohio State and Okla
homa at 7:30.
The 1-2 Comhuskers are cran
ing off two straight losses, against
Oklahoma Feb. 1 and at New
Mexico Feb. 8.
Nebraska Coach Francis Allen
said the Huskers have to hit each
routine to have a chance of upset
ting either team.
Allen said sophomore Marshall
Nelson will be among the top com
petitors on the pommel horse, high
bar and the floor exercise.
Nelson won the floor exercise
(9.8) and the high bar (9.65) at
New Mexico.
