Campus Recreation Center requests funding increase By Sarah Baker Staff Reporter A new climbing wall in the Lee and Helene Sapp Campus Recreation Center is one reason Campus Recre ation said it needed a budget increase at Tuesday’s Committee for Fees Al location meeting. CFA considered the proposed in creases Campus Recreation requested after passing the budget request for the University Health Center. The health center requested and received its $3.34-million request, which was not an increase from the 1996-97 budget. The committee said it was pleased with the clear, concise budget request from the health cen ter. Committee members and healtn center representatives discussed future expenses for the health center, includ ing an enhanced Health Aide program and other specific health-care services. When Campus Recreation stepped up to bat, it requested a budget in crease of 6.9 percent. Director of Campus Recreation Stan Campbell said he needed the in creases to maintain the recreation center’s high standards of serving stu dents. “Student support is vital to the rec center,” Campbell said. “To keep the students coming, we need to maintain the quality services that the center pro vides.” The climbing wall the center is installing will also add to costs. Assistant Director of Campus Rec reation Bill Goa said the climbing wall will be an added draw for students to use the center. “We are striving to have the best rock-climbing wall in Nebraska,” Goa said. The ideal wall will have a natural rock surface, but there are some pos sible drawbacks associated with such a wall. “There is an added cost for the ac tual rock wall, and we also don’t know if the wall that is in the center can i support that much weight,” Goa said. ' Goa and Campbell talked about possible plans to build a 12-court ten nis complex near mrper-5cnramm Smith or Cather-Pound Residence Halls. Although the idea was in its early stages, they hoped to have it ready by 1998 or 2000. Another part of the proposed bud get requested higher wages for recre ation center staff because of minimum wage increase laws. The Campus Recreation-East also asked for additional funds. The cen ter was used 33 percent more during last fall semester than the 1995 fall semester. However, the center does not have any supervision. The requested money will go for one person to staff the center in case of emergencies or to assist students with questions. CFA will vote on Campus Recreation’s budget request Thursday. Sue Tldball nominations requested [ By Graham Johnson Staff Reporter Humanitarians are hard to find. Such a person may be standing in front of a class or processing students’ personal information, answering phones, or cleaning up the mess left by disrespectful students. If students have someone in mind, then it is their duty to nominate that person for the Sue Tidball Award for Creative Humanity, the Rev. Larry Doerr of Campus Ministries said. The award recognizes people at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln who bring justness and togetherness to oth ers around them, Doerr said. The Tidball awards recognize all those who make an extra effort to go beyond their job descriptions. Many of these people may go un noticed, Doerr said, but everybody around these types of people benefit, whether they know it or not. The award was set up to follow the example of Sue Tidball, a member of Campus Ministries until her death in 1976. Although Hdball was diagnosed with a terminal illness at age 30, she was active in counseling groups around campus, volunteering at the Malone Center and helping work with interracial concerns. Nominations are due Feb. 17 and the honorees will be awarded March 16. Nomination forms can be picked up at residence hall desks, Student Involvement, the Culture Center or the greek affairs office. 4 . ;sf: fr . . I' I' -;d I ^If you today, how Call seat!
