McPherson presses on against Kent. Then came Shannon’s death two days alter Nebraska had lost at Iowa State. Sheila flew home the next day and the sisters spent their Feb. 1 birthday together for a final time. At the suggestion of the coaches, McPherson returned to Lincoln Feb. 5, and with the help of the coaches and her teammates, Sheila began a life without her sister. One year later, McPherson said she is starting to come back and play like she used to, but she has a new priority in her life now. Upon her graduation, which she hopes will come in December, she will become the legal guardian of her nephew, Kendall, with many stories to tell him about his mother. SHEILA from 7 impressed Beck and she offered McPherson a scholarship. Playing at Nebraska would separate the twins, who in 20 years had never spent their Feb. 1 birth day apart. “Shannon understood my desire to come here and even encouraged me,” McPherson said. “Her world had changed and she wanted to be around Kendall more.” So, she came to Lincoln while her parents paid the $700-a-month phone bill she racked up calling Shannon every day. McPherson began playing well for the Huskers. She had a career best nine points Dec. 6, 1995, ISU drills NU; streak reaches 3 ISU from page 7 with 6:08 to play before halftime. “One of our game plans was to get inside and get Cato in foul trouble,” Nee said. “We did that, but we just couldn’t handle them for any long period of time.” When Cato sat down, NU scored five of seven points to go on top 26 24, its last lead of the game. Willoughby then canned two straight 3-pointers, igniting a 15-0 ISU run that ended after another Willoughby 3 two minutes into the second half. “We played well in spurts,” said Husker forward Andy Markowski, who hit all four of his field-goal at tempts in 17 minutes. “But you have to give them credit. They stepped up and hit the shots when they had to, and we didn’t. It just seemed like they had everything going for them.” Cyclone Coach Tim Floyd, whose team plays Saturday at Texas A&M, did not agree. “We were terrible on the defensive glass,” Floyd said. “We take that game down to Texas A&M, and we’11 get beat by 20. It wasn’t an Iowa State kind of win.” ISU led 46-32 after a Kenny Pratt bucket five minutes into the half be fore Nebraska began chipping away, finally pulling within 56-53 on a Lue 3-pointer with 6:02 to play. Less than three minutes later, following a 5-2 Cyclone run, Markowski hit a tum i around hook in the lane, cutting the lead to 61-57. But Willoughby, who scored 21 points without taking a shot inside the 3-point arc, hammered a long ball from the top of the key. Pratt, who led all players with 22 points, then con verted a pair of free throws, giving ISU a 68-59 lead with 1:25 to play. Iowa State made 11 of 12 shots from the free-throw line in the final 100 seconds, sealing the win. Jacy Holloway added 14 points and 12 as sists for ISU, and Cookie Belcher scored 12 for NU. “This was a real, real big game for us,” Lue said with a giant sigh. “Now we’ve got to prepare for Saturday.” -- Notice to Students All Students are eligible to apply for a refund of their "A" portion of student fees beginning January 13, 1997, and ending February 7, 1997.
