When the West Coast takes more gas from the line, it affects other parts of the country, Nordell said. More remotely, the price increase has roots in the energy crisis of die late 1970s, when fear about the depletion of fossil fuel reserves sent customers searching for alternative energy sources. The decrease in demand sent the gas supply soaring, as did drilling by gas companies hop ing to profit from the higher market prices of the scare’s earlier days, Nordell said. The industry’s overabundant supply has kept prices very low for the past 15 years — until now. Cohgress’ slow and steady deregulation of the natural gas industry in areas where drilling for replacement gas was expensive has allowed for the market fluctuations, Nordell said. Nordell said that while the market is simply correcting itself, he expected prices to fall to cheaper levels. Tfre problem now is the inability of many customers to pay their present gas bills. Dan Wamonck, UtiliCorp United vice presi dent, said Peoples Natural Gas offers a pro gram which averages their bills over a year. 3 'M - 4 fe. 8| f, Daniel Luedert/DN DAN WARNOCK, vice president of UtiliCorp United, speaks at a committee meeting Tuesday at the State Capitol concerning gas prices.
