Wide thrives despite diverse past WIUE from page 12 Cole and Anderson met when Cole was playing a show with two of the members from Rascal Basket, while Anderson was still with his band, Stew. “It’s like a soap opera. It’sjust rock ‘n’ roll, for God’s sakes. ... Did you go yet?” he asks, inspecting the card pile in front of him. He scowls at his predicament, muttering under his breath, while Hendrix wails “Hey Joe.” Wide managed to build up a fan base around Lincoln before Cole packed up his ax and headed north. “They (the former members) didn’t want to tour,” he says. “So I went to Minneapolis.” ; > ■- - . , He discovered, though, that local bands—even good ones—are a dime a dozen there. “I had a better shot of getting into one of the bars up there while living in Lincoln,” he says. “It was super nova-ing. There were more bands than there were places to play.... Hey, can you see my cards? “Eventually, I just ran out of de sire to be there. This really sucks; I don’t have anything,” he laments, frowning at his hand. Cole returned to Lincoln last fall and hooked up with Anderson. They THcky “Pre-Mlllemimi Tetstoi” Islari Recards Grade: A x Most of us suspect that 2000 will (be like any other year. And even though predictions of Armageddon abound, the fire-and-brimstone rantings of street comer fanatics are easily dismissed by most rational people, for the most part. But a larger-than-normal hunk of that doomsday junk has stuck to Bristol trip-hop aficionado THcky, and “Pre-Millennium Tension” is the re sult. This album, Tricky’s second, is a slight but significant departure from “Maxinquaye,” his 1995 debut. “Maxinquaye” was an angry and dark collection of songs, but it was sliced into often radio-friendly, sometimes hummable 4- or 5-minute tunes. “Pre-Millennium Tension” takes a less accessible, but artistically im proved approach, relying on drawn out samples and swirling textures of drum, guitar, bass and synth sounds. Songs like “Christiansands” and “Bad Dream” are typical of the whole album, relying on repetition and a slow build of emotion that never re solves to result in a beautifully claus trophobic electronic symphony. The opening track, “Vent,” pulls lyrics from Grandmaster Flash’s “The Message” in a masterful manner; when Tricky half-whispers, “Don’t push me, ’cause I’m close to the edge,” you have no choice but to believe him. This is the sound of the walls clos ing in, and if this is what THcky be lieves the next century will sound like, we’d better hope he’s wrong. —MltoM M-— Life is rock ‘n’ roll. Eat it, live it, paste it on your bumper.” Heath Cole singer/guitarist for Wide -:-l——.——^-- • •- - were still stuck for a bass player and were about to call it quits when they found Webb. As if on cue, the front door opens and Webb strides in, toting his bass and a bottle of blue All Sport. “What’s up, you motherf-—oh... hi,’’ he smiles and sets his bass down. He unwraps a package of Mango Berry Bubblicious bubble gum and offers it around, at the same time opening a box of Marlboro reds. Cole, having won the card game, is now reading the supermarket tab loid Globe. “Murder...well, this is a gyp,” he says disgustedly, holding up the maga zine for inspection. “I wanna see blood and brains sprayed all over the place.” On that note, it’s time for Wide to practice. “Life is rock ‘n’ roll,” Cole says. “Eat it, live it, paste it on your bumper.” And Wide embodies aU things rock ‘n’ roll. They’re heavy but groove-ori ented, fast but melodic. Their energy is infectious, as is their collective sense of humor and antics. (At one point, Webb blows a bubble and gets green gum stuck in his hair.) Cole’s voice is reminiscent of early Steven Tyler, but the band’s jumping punk energy is pure Red Hot Chili Peppers. There are other comparisons you could draw to Wide—Stick, Nirvana, the Minutemen. But these guys aren’t 1 fooling anyone — they’re really the bastard children of the Warner Bros., George Carlin and straight-on rock ‘n’ roll.
