The independent filmmaker is starting to become the norm, and Ladely says it has Hollywood sweating because of something other than bright lights. “The independent film field has really come into its own over the last year,” he said, “and we will be seeing more independent films on the nomination list than ever be fore.” “It is possible that, in the near future, we will be seeing more in dependent films nominated for Os cars than Hollywood-based films.” Two films Ladely said he hoped and expected to see nominated in clude “Lone Star” (which ran at the Ross earlier this month) and “Se crets and Lies” (opening Jan. 23). Another major event at the Ross this semester will be the 24th An nual Student Academy Awards, April 3 through 6. “It’s a national competition for film students,” he said. “We’ll be the co-coordinators for region two of the competition, which encom passes 44 states, including the Dis trict of Columbia.” The preliminary winners for this region are named here, Ladely said. Tlie winners then move to a regional competition in Chicago, and the winners there are judged in Hollywood by members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. “It’s a lot of fun,” he said. The general public often sees past winners of this competition in mainstream film releases. “The people who brought us ‘Toy Story’ and ‘Forrest Gump’ won this competition,” Ladely said, “Spike Lee is also a former com petition winner.” Plus, with no admission fee, it’s very appealing to the economically strapped moviegoer. “It’s free, so the price is right.” Ladely also said he was excited about this year’s UPC International Film Series that included films from IsraeL Tunisia and the United Kingdom this semester. “We have some really good films in there.” The Ross Roster All Trims are scheduled to play at the Mary Riepma Ross Rim Theater, located in the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery.
