Jr Mississippi I-back to play for NtT RECRUITS from page 10 “In all the years that I’ve coached,” Foster said, “he’s the best player that I’ve ever coached. “I’Ve played against Walter Payton and Emmitt Smith. He (Buckhalter) has all the tools and characteristics of those guys — except he’s bigger.” t Foster said Buckhalter, who can run the 40-yard dash in 4.4 seconds and has qualified academically, will fit in at Nebraska. Buckhalter said he’s aware of NU’s tradition at I-back but thinks he has a chance to contribute as a true freshman next season. Th£ Huskers return only two scholar ship I-backs, junior-to-be Ahman Green and sophomore De Angelo Evans. “I know about Mike Rozier, Lawrence Phillips,^Anman Green, and De Angelo Evans,” Buckhalter said. “I’m real familiar with all of them and I think I can'fit in.” In the last month, NU has also received commitments from five other players, two of whom have already signed letters of intent and enrolled at Nebraska. Joe Walker, a comerback from Arlington, Texas, originally signed with Baylor last February, but he did not qualify academically. Walker, who became eligible last fall, chose Nebraska in a visit to Lincoln last weekend. Glen Matthews, a lineman from «*> - ' • •; '• * Chicago, also enrolled this week. Matthews, who has two remaining years of eligibility, attended junior college at the Noth Dakota School of Science. Matthews and Walker will participate in spring practice in April. High school seniors Dominic Raiola, a lineman from Honolulu, cornerback Dion Booker, from Oceanside, Calif., and tight end Tracey Wistrom, from Webb City, Mo., have also committed to sign with NU on Feb. 5. Booker and Wistrom follow their older brothers, Michael and Grant—both starters on NU’s de fense for the last two seasons—to Lincoln. 1 S' ANY KING-SIZE HERO GOOD ONLY AT 1QTH & CORNHUSKER Limit 4 per coupon Not valid with other offers Expires 2/16/97 WE DELIVER 477-3852 + AMERICAN LUNG ASSOCIATION* 7101 Newport Avenue. 'v" £':--~C*ry£* — -* Thompson tops win list THOMPSON from page 10 This weekend at the Cliff Keen National Dual Championships at the NU Coliseum, Coach Tim Neumann said he hopes the fourth-ranked Th ompson gets the chance to face two of the three heavyweights rated ahead of him. “(Tolly’s) only going to have one opportunity to move up in the rankings, and that’s this weekend,” Neumann said. Coming into the National Duals, the top-ranked heavyweight is Penn State’s Kerry McCoy. McCoy won the 1994 heavyweight national champion. “If he doesn’t get to see McCoy or Justin Harty this weekend, he’s going to have to go through McCoy to get to somebody in the finals at the NCAAs,” Neumann said. Harty, the third-ranked heavy weight from North Carolina, has be come a thorn in Thompson’s side. Harty and Thompson met at last year’s NCAA Championships with Harty preventing Thompson from a repeat. Harty had to settle for runner-up hon ors as Thompson finished third. Thompson’s quest to knock off a higher-rated wrestler will be difficult, much like the Huskers’ chances to knock off a national power this week end. For the first time since NU has played host to the duals, the Huskers will not be seeded — the top eight teams are seeded—and will be drawn into the tournament Friday night. Neumann said Thompson needs to put the struggles of this young team behind him and concentrate on the one thing he knows best -— winning. “Tolly’s mature enough to know that if it’s your senior year, and you’ve been a national champion once and third once, it’s time to get selfish,” « You can always count on a win from him.” Mark Cody Husker assistant coach Neumann said. Thompson doesn’t see it that way. “They’re (the team) just as good as I am,” Thompson said. “Records are meant to be broken.” With him holding the career wins record, and four falls shy from another record, one might ask if Thompson is the best wrestler in Nebraska history. He says no, but the Husker coach ing staff doesn’t agree. Neumann said Thompson is the-best wrestler at NU that he’s seen since his arrival in 1978. Husker Assistant Mark Cody agrees with Neumann. “He’s consistently the best wrestler in Nebraska history,” Cody said. “You can always count on a win from him.” Cody said no one in the country is more aggressive or stronger than Th ompson, and the reasoning for that can be traced to the return of legendary Husker wrestler Rulon Gardner. Gardner came back this year strictly to help Thompson earn back the na tional title. Thompson’s only goal this season is tobe the best in the nation at heavy weight. And Cody said Thompson should return to the top of the heap again. “He’s head and heels above the rest.” 1 When your schedule isn't flexible, it's nice to know that UNL courses are.
