i ■ w . ‘Evita’ stars shine in Alan Parker’s film EVITA from page 9 whenever he is on the screen. Overall, “Evita” is an incredible spectacle for the senses; although some music was rewritten or added specifically for the screen, it still has the magic of other Webber works (“The Phantom of the Opera,” “Cats”), and the lyrics still have that wonderful weave that has made Tim Rice famous. The level of reality brought by “Evita” is mind-boggling as well, con sidering the thousands of extras to be costumed and the political channels traveled to use the actual balcony from which Eva Peron spoke. Even with the memory of films like “Shanghai Surprise” and “Body of Evidence” in mind, Madonna is ex cellent in the title role. She displays a great deal more versatility in this role than she has shown in her past works (though I still wish original choice Film: “Evita” Director: Alan Parker Stars: Madonna, Antonio Banderas, Jonathan Pryce Rating: PG (mature themes, smatter ing of harsh language) Grade: A Five Words: If a woman were king... Michelle Pfeiffer had been available, but that’s just me). It is Banderas who steals the show. Although his role is limited to play ing bartenders, waiters and so on, he displays an on-screen passion that brings back fond memories of his in credible work in “The Mambo Kings” and “Philadelphia.” It’s more than two hours long, so hit the potty beforehand, because you don’t want to take a chance on miss ing one second of “Evita.” Cool concerts, hot music lineup melt away blahs CONCERTS from page 9 Omaha’s Grasshopper Takeover finishes out the month on Tuesday, Jan. 30.
