—.—-—.-> > By Matthew Waite Senior Reporter Sen.-elect Chuck Hagel notched another Committee assignment on his belt Thursday when he was named to the Senate Special Com mittee on Aging. Hagel will join Iowa Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley, who was named chairman of the com mittee. The committee is the starting point for all government issues related to senior citizens. According to the Nebraska Department on Ag ing, 230,000, or 18.4 percent, of Nebraskans are over the age of 60, a rate higher than the na tional average. Hagel, who has also been assigned to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, the Sen ate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs and will serve as one of 11 Republican deputy whips, said he was pleased with the as signment. “This Congress is going to have to address how we deal with the exploding growth of our entitlement programs, and I spoke frankly on this issue during my campaign,” Hagel said in a press release. Dennis Loose, director of the Nebraska De partment on Aging, said Hagel’s appointment was good for the elderly in Nebraska. “It’s great that we have a senator from Ne braska on that committee,” he said. “There are a numbbr of issues that are very important to Nebraska (coming before the committee).” Loose said the committee will hear issues other than the high-profile cases of Social Se curity and Medicare, that could affect senior citizens across the state. The Older Americans Act, which funds many state programs for seniors, also is up for autho rization, Loose said. Changes to the act advo cated by urban-based states could cost Nebraska more to provide meals for seniors. Nebraska serves more meals per capita to senior citizens than urban state^ do, he said. “It’s very timely, because not only as a state but as a country there are a lot of things being discussed,” he said. “How that all plays out will II (Younger generations) also deserve to know thaP the money they're paying into the system now is genuinely an investment in their future and nbt money they're throwing away into a system that will be bankrupt before they retire.” Sen.-elect Chuck Hagel have a lot to do with the Senate.” In his comments, Hagel concentrated on Medicare and Social Security. He said he was confident the Senate would find solutions to problems. “Medicare is the most pressing issue because if we don’t do something, the Medicare Trust Fund will be broke in just a few years,” he said. “I hope the president will work with the Con gress to preserve this program and secure qual ity health care coverage for Nebraska’s and America’s seniors.” Hagel said Congress needed to assure those who are drawing or will draw Social Security that there would be no drop-off in service. “But we need to explore future options for our younger generations,” he said. “They also deserve to know that the money they’re paying into the system now is genuinely an investment in their future and not money they’re throwing away into a system that will be bankrupt before they retire.” ■I Questions about Internet access and the modem pool?
