Mackovic said the difference in
the game was the Longhorns’ quick
strike ability, opposed to the Husk
ers, who averaged 12 plays per
drive. Texas, which held the ball for
only 20:25 and 57 plays to NU’s
39:35 and 87 plays, averaged six
plays per drive.
“We didn’t give them an easy
score, and that was the key,”
Mackovic said. “They always had
to work for it. They would work all
that time to just barely catch up, and
then we would score that fast.
“Then in the fourth quarter,
when they had to try and score in a
hurry, they couldn’t do it.”
Nebraska Defensive Coordina
tor Charlie McBride agreed with
Mackovic, saying the Huskers were
never able to slow the Longhorns.
McBride also said the Huskers
made too many mistakes, which was
disappointing after the success NU’s
defense had one week earlier in a
17-12 win over Colorado.
The Longhorns added a field
goal with 1:23 remaining in the first
half to take a 20-17 halftime lead.
But after Texas added a 47-yard
field goal in the third quarter, Ne
braska appeared to gain the momen
tum.
The Huskers put together a 15
play, 72-yard drive to take a 24-23
lead when Evans scored on a six
yard run with 2:11 remaining in the
third quarter.
On the Longhorns’ next series,
Eric Warfield intercepted Brown at
the Nebraska 47-yard line. The
Husker offense moved the ball to
the Texas 4, but on third and goal,
Frost fumbled a pitch to Evans.
Evans recovered, but Nebraska had
to settle for a 24-yard field goal and
a 27-23 lead.
Texas’ quick-strike ability hit
again when the Longhorns went 80
yards in three plays, scoring to take
a 30-27 lead. Facing a second and
13 from the LIT 34, Brown found
wide receiver Wane McGarity for
66 yards, lofting a pass over Minter.
Minter, who had played the
whole game at linebacker, was play
ing rover because of an injury to
Warfield.
“Of course, he hadn’t worked at
safety all week,” Osborne said. “He
just misjudged the ball. He obvi
ously hadn’t been playing the deep
ball the last two weeks, and I’m sure
if he had a little bit of practice there,
he might have been all right.”
Nebraska took the ensuing kick
off and moved the ball to the Texas
38-yard line. On fourth and four, the
Huskers decided to go for the first
down, but an illegal procedure pen
alty pushed the ball back to Texas
43, forcing NU to punt.
UT was pinned at its own 4 yard
line, but Brown completed an eight
yard pass under heavy pressure in
the end zone to Pat Fitzgerald. Five
plays later, Brown hit Lewis for the
fourth-down back-breaker.
“We went from the penthouse to
the outhouse overnight,” McBride
said. “I thought in every game we
have played this year, we have
played well — except this one. We
never slowed them down any.”

“1 just sat there and waited on
it,” Moore said. “He usually makes
his free throws, so I don’t get much
practice. It’s just instinct.”
Moore, also an all-tournament
selection along with Adonal Foyle
of Colgate, Coppin State’s Terquin
Mott and Bowling Green’s Antonio
Daniels, blocked a team-high three
shots Saturday and a set a school
record with nine rejections against
Coppin State Friday. Moore’s 179
career blocks are just four short of
Rich King’s school record of 183.
The Huskers will take the court
for the fourth time in nine days on
Wednesday, when they play Mis
souri-Kansas City at 7:30 p.m. in
Kansas City.

earn honors

Kari Uppinghouse, a midfielder on
the Nebraska soccer team, has been
named one of 12 first-team All-Ameri
cans by the NSCAA.
Uppinghouse, a 5-foot-ll junior
from Littleton, Colo., broke Nebraska’s
single-season scoring record this fall
with 48 points on 19 goals.
Freshman forward Lindsay
Eddleman was named to the second
team, and junior goalkeeper Becky
Hombacher made the third team.
The Huskers lost to Portland in the
NCAA Tournament quarterfinals, end
ing their third season of play with a
record of 23-1 and a No. 5 ranking.
Russell, Pine
lead Huskers
Nebraska senior Julia Russell com
pleted a sweep of the breaststroke
events by winning the 100-yard com
petition Sunday at the Jamail Texas
Swimming Center in Austin, Texas.
No team scoring was kept in the
third day of the Texas Invitational, but
other NU winners this weekend in
cluded Juan Benavides, Adam Pine,
Benji Lodholm, Josh Mathias, Chris
Ford and Justin Kapinus on the men’s
side.
Pine, a freshman, broke an NU
record Friday in the 100-yard butter
fly with a time of47.47 seconds.
Husker winners on the women’s
side included Russell and freshman
Sara Jowsey, who won the 400-yard
individual medley.

But Nebraska lost its momentum

on an Osborne kill. Arkansas hit
.305 for the game, taking advantage
of the Huskers’ outside blocking

NU regained control in games
three and four. Nebraska’s Maria
Hedbeck scored the first point of the
game three, and the Huskers never
relinquished their lead, holding the
Lady Razorbacks to .125 hitting.
Game four was more of the same
for Nebraska. With NU leading 9
7, Hedbeck stepped up again at the
serving line and reeled off five
straight points in a run that included
two kills and a block by Cmich.
But it was Reitsma who domi
nated the final game. NU’s outside
hitter — who converted on all 10
of her kill attempts — said she el
evated her play in the final two
games of the match.
“I knew we just needed to push
through it,” Reitsma said. “I knew I
had to be there emotionally and
physically to pick the team up.”
Despite the loss, Arkansas
Coach Chris Poole was pleased with
his team’s effort.
“I didn’t know what to expect,”
Poole said. “We came out and
played well with one of the best pro
grams in the country. It’s just one
more step for our program.”
Pettit wasn’t nearly as pleased.
“I’m mostly disappointed in our
defense,” Pettit said. “We’re not a
great offensive team. We hit .406,
but our strength is our defense.
“To hit .406 and still have Ar
kansas in the match is not what we
wanted.”

can be purchased as a package at
the NU ticket office for $14 (lower
seats) and $10 (upper seats). Indi
vidual tickets sold at the coliseum
cost $8 and $6.
