I Daily Nebraskan awarded Pacemaker From Staff Reports ORLANDO, Fla. — The Daily Nebraskan won its first Pacemaker Aw^rd for general ex cellence of a student publication at the National College Media Convention here Saturday. Tom Rolnicki, executive director of the As sociated Collegiate Press, called Che Pacemaker the “Pulitzer Prize” of college journalism. The 16,000-circulation newspaper was one of five daily newspapers from four-year univer sities that received the award, which was pre sented by the ACP and the Newspaper Associa tion of America Foundation during the four-day convention in Orlando, Fla. Pacemaker Awards have been given to col lege publications since the 1920s. Publications are asked to submit issues from specific dates of the last academic year. Professional journal ists judge the entries based on content, design and overall quality. Chris Hain, Daily Nebraskan editor during the 1995-1996 year, said the award reflected on an experienced, committed staff. During his year as editor, Hain said that the Daily Nebraskan started with an experienced fall staff. Though many of those staff members left at the end of the semester, he said, they “set the bar really high” for the spring staff to follow. “They took pride in their work. They knew thejob and worked hard at it,” he said. “We had people who carecTabout the newspaper and it showed.” The efforts of the Daily Nebraskan’s staff were matched up against about 75 entries. Out of 10 finalists, five were given awards. The four other winners were: • Indiana Daily Student, Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind. • Ball State Daily News, Ball State Univer sity in Muncie, Ind. • Daily Tar Heel, University of North Caro lina in Chapel Hill, N.C. • The Daily, University of Washington in Seattle. Current Daily Nebraskan Editor Doug Kouma said the award gave the newspaper and the University ofNebraska-Lincoln national rec ognition. “I think it’s a recognition of the changes that have been made at the Daily Nebraskan in the last several years,” he said. Kouma said it was an honor to be consid ered among the ranks of the nation’s largest and best college newspapers. “It’s exciting, but at the same time it’s a chal lenge because it gives us a lot to live up to.” lbwn halts temperance trend AL/nmo eyes were on oo-year old Ollie Harms as he tipped a glass of beer and gulped his way into history. Harms became the first person to purchase and drink a malt beverage Friday in this once temperance stronghold located in southeast Nebraska, about 35 miles from Lincoln. He did it for the future of his village. “There wasn’t a car on Main Street during the day until this opened again,” Harms said as customers began to pour into the Hornet’s Nest. Customers at the Hornet’s Nest seemed as happy about the cafe being open again as they were about liquor being sold there for the first time since the town was founded in 1872. The cafe had been closed for two months after its previous owner retired. Diane and Linda Veerhusen reopened it two weeks ago after fighting a hornet’s nest of their uwa to gei approval ior a liquor license, some people in the community opposed the license because of Adams’ long history as a dry town. Residents believe the town’s founder, John O. Adams, declared in 1872 that no liquor would be sold in the town for 100 years. %*. Over the years, people had tried and failed to get permission to sell alcohol in Adams. It finally happened Nov. 8, when the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission approved a liquor license for the Hornet’s Nest. Harms said that before Friday night, he and other Adams residents had to drive to Pickrell, Sterling or even Filley to purchase alcohol. Veerhusen said the cafe owners decided to let Harms have the honor of drinking the first beer sold in Adams because of his age and be cause he and his wife, the late Teda Harms, once had $ cafe of their own in Adams.
