Attention psychology majors: there
may be a future for you in mime.
Just ask Paul Raj ectas and Neil
Intraub, two New York State Univer
sity psychology majors-tumed profes
sional movement theater artists.
“We were psychology majors at
Stoney Brook and we met in a mime
; class we were both taking,” Intraub
I said. “We were thrown into an assign
| ment and found we liked working to
gether.”
| Rajeckas and Intraub, whose
unique partnership has lasted 17 years,
performed Thursday through Saturday
at the Johnny Carson Theater, as part
of the Lied Cento' for Performing Aits
fall lineup.
They’Ve been hailed by critics asa
modern-day Laurel and Hardy, and the
duo themselves admit to being influ
enced extensively by that comic part
nership.
“I’ve always enjoyed the comic
actors, like Laurel and Hardy,” Intraub
Said. “I watched their movies, and try
to leam about their timing and the use
oftheir characters.”
Rajeckas and Intraub combine hu
morous miming with exaggerated
movements, adding verbal comedy and
a soundtrack overlay to create a funny
and thought-provoking performance.
The pair performed three sets,
* “Imagination In Motion,” “The Past
Tense Of To Be Is To Was” and “Broth
erly Love.”
The first set included comic takes
on everyday life, including trouble with
cars and with digestive tracts. This
piece included quite a bit of dialogue
and acting, complete with exaggerated
New Yortacceots^.x^^^^^i.,
The artists also did an audience
participation exercise, and invited five
audience members to come on stage
for a game of “telephone,” with physi
cal messages instead of whispered
ones.

Rajeckas and Intraub spent time in
Lincoln and Omaha last week work
ing with students from first grade
through graduate level. Through mas
ter classes, they teach the creative pro
cesses used in movement theater.
“We teach the body ways to con
centrate, so the body remembers what
it feels like to concentrate,” Rajeckas
said.
“The telephone game was a kines
thetic exercise based on a childhood
game of communication,” he said.
“You try to copy what the leaders are
doing rather than focusing on yourself,
and you begin to leant what it feels like
to create something larger than its
parts.”
—- : " — - i
The next two sets were deeper, per
sonal pieces about the artists’ own
lives. They dealt with such adult
themes as the guilt associated with put
ting a parent in a nursing home and the
pain of a parent’s death from a termi
nal illness.
“The first half of the program is our
older material. It helps us warm up and
gets the audience relaxed,” Rajeckas
said. “Then it progresses into more
autobiographical and abstract pieces.
It’s purposely set up that way.” '
“There are deliberate layers of am
biguity so that the audience can inter
pret it and read into it whatever they
want,” Intraub said.
