FCC debates ban on hard Kquor ads
WASHINGTON (AP) — Con
gress, not the Federal Communications
Commission, should deal with the li
quor industry’s decision to abandon its
decades-old ban on TV advertising, an
FCC commissioner said Monday.
FCC Commissioner James Quelle
said the agency has no legal authority
to intervene. He said he opposed FCC
Chairman Reed Hundt’s suggestion
two weeks ago that the FCC consider
regulatory action if the TV industry
doesn’t uphold the ban voluntarily.
ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox have
promised they would uphold the ban,
But more than 1,000 individual TV sta
tions and cable channels have yet tc
decide whether they'll air such ads.
Quello said Congress should deal
with die issue legislatively upon its re
turn in January.
Earlier this month, the Distilled
Spirits Council of the United State*
decided to abandon the ad ban, which
for 60 years barred radio ads promot
ing such products as vodka, tequila and
whiskey and 12 years later extendec
the ban to television.

Kellogg,expands breakfast with Lender’s
BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (AP) —
Kellogg wants to feed everyone at your
breakfast table, including those who
prefer toasted bagels to Frosted Flakes.
Kellogg Co. — the maker of Pop
Tarts, Eggo frozen waffles and Frosted
Flakes and Rice Krispies cereals —
said Monday it is buying Lender’s Ba
gels from Kraft Foods Inc. for $455
million. Lender’s is the nation’s big
gest bagel maker — frozen, refriger
ated and fresh—with annual sales of
$275 million.
For Kraft, the deal ends its role in
the bakery business. It sold off its other
bakery businesses — including
Entenmann’s cookies and cakes and
Boboli pizza crusts—more than a year
ago to CPC International Inc. for $865
million.
Lender’s “is very much consistent
with Kellogg’s long-standing tradition
of nutrition and diet,” said Joseph M.
Stewart, Kellogg’s vice president of
corporate affairs.
The deal is expected to be com
pleted by the end of the year and in
cludes Lender’s plants in West Haven
and New Haven, Conn.; Mattoon, 111.;
and Buffalo, N.Y.
Stewart said the plants’ 800 jobs
will not be affected. Lender’s is based
in White Plains, N.Y.
Robert S. Morrison, Kraft’s chair
man and chief executive, said Lender’s
did not fit with the company’s overall
direction. Northfield, 111.-based Kraft
is owned by Philip Morris Cos.
Kellogg’s stock fell slightly on the
news, down 1214 cents at $68.1214 in
late afternoon trading on the New York
Stock Exchange. Philip Morris shares
climbed 62 'A cents each to $ 101.75' in
NYSE trading.
