ALAMOGORDO, N.M. (AP) —
Fighting a raspy voice on his final six
state campaign dash, Bob Dole urged
voters Monday to choose him over four
more years of “arrogant” government
under President Clinton.
Standing in bright sunshine with
mountains and a space museum’s vin
tage rockets for a backdrop, Dole told
several hundred people, “I know a little
about service and I know a little about
sacrifice.”
“I’ve never seen a more arrogant
group than the one that occupies the
White House right now. They don’t
believe the rules apply to them,” he
said.
Perry: Plots were targeted
WASHINGTON (AP) — The
pilots of two U.S. F-16s who fired
high-speed missiles at Iraqi radar
sites in separate incidents over the
past three days had every indication
they were being targeted by Iraqi
missiles, Defense Secretary William
Perry said today.
“These incidents did occur. In
both cases, the F-16 warning gear
alerted that they were being tracked
by a surface-to-air missile system
and... tliey launched a HARM mis
sile, a radiation-seeking missile, to
ward the source of that radiation,”
Perry said.
The Iraqi Foreign Ministry said
the incidents were fabricated by the
Ginton administration “to divert the
attention of American voters from
their domestic scandals by creating
false problems abroad.”
Since no evidence has been
found that Iraq actually launched
any missiles, Perry said an intense
investigation is underway.
He said he did not know whether
faulty equipment might be involved
or whether the Iraqis were playing
cat-and-mouse games with their ra
dar systems.

As he crisscrossed states and four
time zones, Dole contended that the
Clinton White House would face in
creasing legal entanglements that could
hurt the country in a second term.
“If you want a full-time president
who won’t be going to hearings or tri
als or anything else, Bob Dole is your
choice,” he said. “I will bring integrity
back to the White House.”
Milosevic heads
to Serbian win
with wife’s help
BELGRADE, Yugoslavia (AP)—
Serbia’s ruling couple — President
Slobodan Milosevic and his influential'
wife — were heading for a landslide
victory Monday over a united demo
cratic opposition in national elections.
A win for the coalition of
Milosevic’s governing Socialists and
his wife’s neo-Communists would seal
his decade-long grip on Serb-led Yu
goslavia, which he propelled into and
out of war.
With 50 percent of the vote
counted, Milosevic’s Socialists and his
wife Miijana Markovic’s Communists
were leading with 48 percent. The four
party opposition alliance Zajedno had
24 percent, and the ultranationalist
Serbian Radicals were third with 19
percent, according to the state electoral
commission. |
The opposition noted the incum- '
bents control every lever of power, in- I
eluding election officials, and said the
balloting was plagued by irregularities,
but Milosevic spokesman Ivica Dacic
rejected their claims.
“The opposition is looking for an
alibi for its electoral loss,” he said.
Some 7.5 million voters in Serbia
and Montenegro, the two republics
which remain a part of Yugoslavia,
chose representatives for the lower,
138-seat federal Parliament, municipal
authorities and members of
Montenegro’s legislature Sunday.
Turnout was about 64 percent.

Sacramento, Calif., to Phoenix, where
he visited a diner to sip sane hot tea
—“Thank you, I’m a little hoarse,” he
said—and told about 500 people gath
ered outside in the chilly pre-dawn air
that one poll even showed the race
close to a dead heat.
“If that poll is accurate, if it’s tied
today, we’ll win tomorrow,” Dole said.
Dole was next headed to Houston;
Lafayette, La.; Knoxville, Tenn.; and
Des Moines, Iowa. Some are GOP
strongholds Dole hopes to shore up,
while others have important congres
sional races.
He will wind up early today in In
dependence, Mo., to visit former Presi
dent Harry Truman’s statue and then
travel to his hometown of Russell,
Kan., to vote and hold his campaign
finale.
