Coaches agree: Lue is ‘the man’

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Tyronn
Lue hasn’t been listed or even men
tioned as a possible member of any of
the Big 12’s preseason all-conference
teams.
But that didn’t stop the league’s
coaches from bringing up his name
often Thursday at the Big 12 Preseason
Media Day in Kansas City.
“I know that Tyronn Lue, Chauncey
(Billups) and (Jacque) Vaughn have to
be three of the top point guards in this
league,” Iowa State Coach Tun Floyd
said. “Lue had caught our attention a
year ago, and I am a big believer in
having good backcourt play.”
Both Colorado’s Billups and Kan
sas’ Vaughn are preseason first-team
All-Big 12 selections.

“With Nebraska and Colorado, it’s
more of a hatred rivalry. But with Okla
homa and Nebraska, I think both teams
respect each others’ programs.
“It’s going to be a war no matter
what.”
Oklahoma has hit the skids recently,
taking some of the luster off the rivalry.
The Sooner football program has its
third coach in as many years and has
won only seven of its last 20 games.
“Certainly the first four games
weren’t very good for them,” NU
Coach Tom Osborne said, “but re
cently, they have been playing pretty
good football.”

with losses to Texas Christian, San
Diego State, Tulsa and Kansas before
beating Texas in overtime and down

ing position as a freshman. He’s some
one that the players respect and they
like. He’s very good.”
The Huskers, who finished 21-14
last season, open their season Nov. 23
with a non-conference matchup against
Texas in Austin, Texas. The two teams
meet again in conference play on Feb.
16 in Lincoln.
Although Texas Coach Tom
Penders doesn’t remember much about
Nebraska after losing to the Huskers
last year in Lincoln, he did remember
Lue.
“They got a great little point guard
back,” Penders said. “I thought that
Lue kid was one of the best guards we
played last year, even though he was a

Missouri Coach Norm Stewart
thinks Nebraska will be successful —
not just because of Lue, but because
of true freshman Cookie Belcher, who
is also from Mexico, Mo.
“They’ll be good because they’re
using my players,” Stewart said.
Note:

guard Reggie Freeman, Iowa State se

were named to the preseason All-Big

Huskers vie for Big 12 title

After a two-week break from com
petition, the Nebraska men’s and
women’s cross country teams will com
pete Saturday at the Big 12 Champi
onships in Ames, Iowa.
Nebraska Coach Jay Dirksen said
die 26th-ranked women’s team and the
No. 11 men’s team are both ready for
a higher level of conq>etition.
“It’s really like all this has been pre
season games ana now we re getting
into the meat of the season,” Dirksen
said.
The women’s competition will in
clude four top 20 teams in Iowa State,
Colorado, Baylor and Missouri. The
men will be challenged by No. 3 Colo
rado and No. 14 Oklahoma State.
If the Huskers run to their poten
tial, Dirksen said, both teams could
compete for the conference title.
“Every person in our team is com
ing around at die right time,” he said.
