ostriches. The song, which is still a
good tune, is perfectly in step with
“August.” With strong piano and

“Have You Seen Me Lately?”
; proves, however, that Duritz isn’t stuck

forever.
“I was out on the radio starting to
change,” he sings. “Somewhere out in
America it’s starting to rain/Could you
tell me the things/You remember about
me/And have you seen me lately?”
After three years, we have seen you
again, Mr. Duritz. We’re glad you’re

and trying to suck its thumb. I could
have sworn I heard it laughing.”
Once she was pregnant, the
woman who has mass-marketed
herself through incarnations as ac
tress, pop diva, vamp and “boy
toy,” suddenly became a recluse.
She was rarely photographed
while pregnant and was reported to
be scaling down her lifestyle this
summer. After putting her Holly
wood Hills mansion on the market
she moved into a smaller, $2.7 mil
lion home in the Los Feliz district,
the Los Angeles Times reported.
For years she has said she
wanted a child. Her mother died
when she was a young girl, leaving
her, she said, with “a longing, a feel
ing of emptiness.”
She met Leon, an amateur bi
cycle racer, while running in
Manhattan’s Central Park in 1994.
Two months later, Madonna was
having Thanksgiving dinner with
Carlos’ relatives in Miami Beach.
“Even then she talked about ba
bies,” Carlos’ brother, Armando,
told People magazine.

Havel earns reward
for suggesting Love
play the wife of Flynt
PRAGUE, Czech Republic (AP)—
Vaclav Havel: playwright,philosopher,
president... casting director?
The Czech president earned his re
ward for advice he gave to director
Milos Forman when Forman gave
Havel a sneak preview Tuesday of his
new movie, “The People vs. Larry
Flynt.”
Havel suggested rock diva
Courtney Love should play the wife of
Flynt, the Hustler magazine publisher.
The Czech-born Forman, who won
Oscars for “One Flew Over the
Cuckoo’s Nest” and “Amadeus,” ar

cerpted in the November issue of Van
ity Fair magazine, says Menem got a
peek at her bra strap and then couldn’t
keep his eyes off her when they met in
February as she visited during filming
of “Evita.”
Not quite, the 66-year-old Menem
said.
“I didn’t feel fascinated or attracted
by her.... She isn’t that special,” he said
Tuesday.
Menem has had doubts about Ma
donna before. He said she was “totally
unsuitable” to portray legendary first
lady Eva Peron, but had a change of
heart after meeting her and allowed
“Evita” director Alan Parker to film
some scenes on the famed Government
House balcony.

Trocaire objected when O’Connor
ripped up a picture of Pope John Paul

“This is nothing personal against
Sinead O’Connor,” the spokesman
said.
The Nov. 10 concert will mark the
first anniversary of the execution of

Trocaire will not go
DUBLIN, Ireland (AP) — If
Sinead O’Connor’s in, the Roman
Catholics are out.
Trocaire, a Catholic relief group,
withdrew from a fund-raising concert
in Dublin next month because it will
feature the Irish singer known for her
bitter criticism of the church.
“We were not aware she was going
to be asked to take part in the concert,
but... when we found out, we had to
pull out,” a spokesman who requested
anonymity said Tuesday.
The actress says she came afoul of
schoolyard toughs when she was 12
because she looked a little too boyish.
“I was beat up pretty badly on the
third day of school because three guys
thought I was a gay boy. I got six
stitches in my head, was slammed into
a locker, got a fractured rib,” Ryder told
The Tennessean newspaper in an in
terview published Tuesday.
“I insisted I was a girl. I had really
short hair and stuff, and so they beat
me up,” said Ryder, who is promoting
her upcoming movie ‘The Crucible.”
