Democrat Gov. Ben Nelson’s use
of a voter-advocate group’s informal
tion against Republican Chuck Hagel
brought the ire of Project Vote Smart.
The group has condemned Nelson
for using their information for “mud
slinging” and political gain.
The Nelson campaign used infor
mation from a questionnaire released
on Project Vote Smart’s web site to
criticize Hagel’s stances on education.

Monday, Nelson criticized Hagefs
proposed education cuts, citing another
question to which Hagel said he would
not support federal involvement in pri
mary and secondary schools.
The Hagel campaign distributed a
press release from Project Vote Smart
that said Nelson used the group’s name
to add credibility to “an unethical and
misleading attack” against Hagel.
The nonprofit group has a policy
to cohdemif any candidate who uses
Project Vote Smart information for
political gain, the release said.
Nelson’s criticism of Hagel stems
from a questionnaire that asked what
changes a candidate supported in fed
eral funding of a group of categories.
Hagel did not answer the student
loan programs category. Nelson indi
cated he would slightly increase fund
ing for the program.
“Mr. Hagel has been noncommit
tal when asked what will happen to
Nebraska students if his proposed

elimination of the Department of Edu
cation were to become a reality,” a
Nelson release said.
Hagel said Nelson’s claim distorted
his record. He said he supported block
grants from the federal government to
states while eliminating bureaucracy
in Washington.
“I believe education is a local is
sue — it should be between parents,
teachers, administrators and local
school boards,” Hagel said.
According to Project Vote Smart,
Nelson alsa favors block grants to the
states for education.
