NU returns to the road BUFFS from page 7 The effort the Huskers have given in practice over the last week has pleased Pettit, who said he is happy as long as the team continues to improve. “The real issue in our conference now is not just the opponent,” Pettit said. “We have five teams ranked in the top 25. You have to be a lot better than your opponent to win on the road.” In the AVCA Coaches’ Poll re leased Tuesday, Nebraska remained at No. 6 behind Long Beach State, Stanford, Florida, Penn State and Ha waii. The Huskers will return home to host an exhibition match against the U.S. National Team, Friday at 7:30 pjn. at the Bob Devaney Sports Cen ter. Nebraska will then play Oklahoma at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the NU Coli seum. AVCA 1. The Huskers fired a 54-hole total of 909, the best ever for a NU squad, to beat second place Texas A&M by 18 strokes. Texas finished 37 strokes behind in third. Nebraska was one of four teams in the tournament ranked by Golf Week Magazine. Texas was ranked second in the nation, followed by Oklahoma State at No. 10, Texas A&M at No. 25 and No. 26 NU. Husker Coach Robin Krapfi saw the win as a confidence builder for big tournaments. “It’s the biggest win of the season and the biggest win for us nationally,” Krapfi said. “This gives us the confi dence to challenge for the champion ship in any tournament.” Nebraska was led by freshman Hanne Nyquist, who finished third in dividually with a score of 224, one stroke behind winner Mary Coleman Hornsby of Baylor. Also finishing in the top 10 for NU was junior Rachelle Thcha in a tie for fourth at 225 and Shirin Homecker in 10th with 230. The Huskers shot out to a giant lead on the first day with a score of596,25 strokes ahead of Missouri. NU shot a 313 on Tuesday, but still managed to cruise to victoiy. NU’s next tournament will be Mon day and Tuesday at the Kansas/ Wheatshocker Invitational in Lawrence, Kan. The Comhuskers stayed one spot ahead of Big 12 rival Texas A&M. Nebraska, top-ranked Notre Dame, No. 4 Maryland and No. 12 Harvard have the only perfect records among the nation’s top 25 teams. The Huskers are still ranked No. 1 in the Central Region, ahead of the Aggies, Texas and Vanderbilt, all of whom NU has beaten this year. NU appears on track to gain the top seed in the Big 12 Tournament, which begins Nov. 7 in St. Louis. Baylor, a first-year program, is 9 0-r after defeating McNeese State 11-0 last weekend, but the Bears are ranked No. 9 in the Central Region. NU will play Baylor irt Waco, Texas, on Oct. 25. Husker Coach John Walker credits the NU success and its rise in the polls — the Huskers were ranked No. 25 at the beginning of the season—to a stiff Husker de fense. Nebraska has posted seven shut out victories this season. For the year, 11-0 NU has outscored its opposition 47-6. And the Huskers have outshot their opponents 248 64. “We preach all week long on how we want the defense to set the tempo,” Walker said. “Everyone contributes, and we use a collective mentality.” USA Today Top 25 £k Rank Toons Rocord JJ2 k Nekwki 114-1 SSZmZS WjO 24. In its 3-2 overtime win over Vanderbilt two weeks ago, the Huskers led 2-0 before Vanderbilt evened the score. “We usually lode at three goals as our magic number to where the other team can’t come back,” midfielder Becky Hogan said. “We preach defense everyday. I have a lot of respect for the defenders. They’ve really stepped it up.” Coaches: Kicking game is special KICKING from page 7 against Baylor. Legate is questionable because of a lingering hamstring injury. Fullback Joel Makovicka, another mainstay on the kick-coverage teams, also suffers from a hamstring injury and is ques tionable for Saturday. Osborne called both Legate and Makovicka wedge-breakers, meaning they are the first playets down the field to break the wedge that develops in front of the opposing team’s return men. “They go down and hit the wedge,” Osborne said. “The good thing about it, they not only hit the wedge, they go through the wedge and make tackles.” Stepping in for the injured wedge breakers, Young said, will be Brian Shaw and Ben Kingston. Kingston, a freshman fullback from Omaha Westside, will fill in for Legate, and Shaw, a freshman Sam linebacker tiom Deweese, will possibly fill in for Makovicka, Young said. Notes: No.l I-back Ahman Green did not practice Tuesday because of a sprained toe. Osborne said if Green is unable practice at full speed today, he will not start Saturday. The NU Athletic Department an nounced Ibesday that plans have been finalized to play Akron next season on Aug. 30 in Lincoln. The Zips are Nebraska’s 11th opponent, filling a schedule that had been left with two holes after Northern Illinois and Ar kansas State backed out of contracts. Following the Akron game, Ne braska will play host to Central Florida on Sept. 13 and travel to Washington on Sept. 20.
