Snyder praises NU, can win By David Wilson Staff Reporter MANHATTAN, Kan. — Kan sas State Coach Bill Snyder knows Nebraska. After losing to the Comhuskers seven times in seven tries, Snyder knows their plays, their coaching staff and their players. And he knows the Wildcats will have to play a perfect game Saturday to beat No. 6 Nebraska. “They’ve always been the same way,” Snyder said. “They’ve got a great I-back, and they will just keep handing it off and handing it off. “They’ve got just enough weap ons.” Nebraska’s 19-0 loss Sept. 21 to Arizona State proved that the Husk ers are beatable, Snyder said, but the game was not characteristic of Ne braska. “It does show that they’re not in vincible and they are human,” Snyder said. “But at the same time, it may have motivated them. I think there were a lot of circumstances in that ball game that probably won’t happen again.” in 1994 —the last time Ne braska played Kansas State in Man hattan — the Wildcats tried a no back, five-wide receiver formation against NU. The strategy failed in a 17-6 Husker win in which KStJ rushed the ball 23 times for minus 7 yards. “If it doesn’t work,” Snyder said, “it’s a bad strategy. We had some chances with that, but we didn’t get it done. “Nebraska’s not a team that you can trick.” Snyder said his team thinks it can beat the Huskers, but confi dence can only carry them so far. “If you’re trying to accomplish something, you better believe you can do it. Maybe I was naive, but I can’t think of a ballgame that we’ve gone into with Nebraska that we didn’t believe we had a chance to win. “You better take a lot of things to war with you. Belief is one of them. But you have to take some ammunition, too.” Braves, Cardinals win LOS ANGELES (AP) — Fred Me Griff’s solo homerun barely cleared the fence and Jermaine Dye’s was never in doubt. McGriff and Dye had two of Atlanta’s three solo homers and Greg Maddux pitched seven strong innings Thursday as the Braves defeated the Dodgers 3-2 to take a two-game lead in their best-of-five National League playoff series. In St. Louis, a member of the Car dinals* mostly forgotten old guard ended nine years of frustration. Major League Playotls Tom Pagnozzi, who played on the 1987 World Series team before the Cardinals had several mediocre sea sons, drove in the game-winner with a shot off reliever Trevor Hoffman’s glove in the eighth inning Thursday, giving St. Louis a 5-4 win over the San Diego Padres and a 2-0 lead in their National League playoff series. The teams resume their best-of-five series Saturday in San Diego. ’ Huskers face KSU from page 7 * To Husker Coach Tom Osborne, Saturday is more than just another game. It’s a major obstacle, and if Ne braska takes the Wildcats lightly, he said, the Huskeis can forget about play ing in£t. Louis in December. “They (Kansas State) are nptateam that you lode at and say there are some strengths and some weakness,” Osborne said. “They are pretty solid across the board.” Notes: e Nebraska’s Ryan Terwilliger (lower back and hip strain) is doubtful for Saturday, Osborne said. Terrell Farley will start at Will linebacker. Farley, a starter for six games last year, was sus pended this season for NU’s first two games. He backed up Terwilliger last week. The Nebraska Athletic Director Bill Byrne announced Thursday that Cen tral Florida has been added to the 1997 football schedule. The Golden Knights will visit Lincoln cm Sept. 13.
