NEW YORK (AP)—Jay Leno says he’s at
peace with how he and former manager Helen
Kushnick parted. Kushnick, who built Leno’s
career as his manager for 17 years and then
jeopardized it, died of cancer in August.
“It was a bad breakup,” Leno says in the
new issue of TV Guide.
“It had been coming for a long time,” Leno
said. “I was tired of pretending there wasn’t a
problem ... Helen was the type when she broke
something off that was that.”
When both of his parents died Leno said he
heard nothing from Kushnick, who knew them
both.
“Not even a note,” he said. “If she had writ
ten, I would have picked up the phone. After
that I thought — that’s it.”

diet and describes her late father’s fashion tastes

NEW YORK (AP) — Madonna had night
mares that endless dancing during the making
of “Evita” was going to hurt her unborn baby.
The singer-actress summoned a doctor to
have the fetal heartbeat checked in the middle
of an arduous dance sequence that she had re
peated at least 15 times in 36 hours, she says
in the October issue of Vogue.
“OK, I didn’t kill it,” she recalled thinking
after the test. “I can go back to the set now.”
Pregnancy took its toll. Madonna com
plained of feeling exhausted throughout the
production and had to use furs, purses and other
props to camouflage her swelling tummy.
She also told Vogue she thought ex-husband
Sean Penn got married last spring as “some
sort of knee-jerk response to me, if you must
know. When it was revealed that I was preg
nant. My reaction was, this is Sean trying to be
dramatic.”
NEW YORK (AP) — She’s barely into the
new season as Murphy Brown’s new boss, yet
actress Lily Tomlin is already being considered
for her own series.
“1 have made an arrangement with CBS to
look into the possibility,” Tomlin, 57, told Liz
Smith in an interview published in next week’s
TV Guide. “But I don’t know where that will
lead me.”
For now, Tomlin’s focused (Mi her “Murphy
Brown” role.
“If I seem nervous, it’s only because the
show is a favorite of so many people. It’s a clas
sic,” she said. “There’s a lot of expectation. You
know, they want me to come in here and just
have a load of fun with Murphy. Really zap
her.”
As for her own character, Tomlin said, “I
have in mind some stuff for her. I think they
want me to maybe start up something with
Redfield. You know, Miller Redfield, the good
looking, vacuous guy played by Christopher
Rich? We’ll probably get into some sexual ha
rassment.” . '
