Jan Berringer couldn’t be
lieve the cards, letters and sup
port she received after the plane
crash that killed her son, Brook,
in April.
Almost five months later, she
is still surprised when she re
ceives condolences from people
who never met Brook but were
touched by him.
Saturday, as Jan, her daugh
ters Drue and Nicoel, and
Brook’s niece, Ellen Brook,
were welcomed home to Memo
rial Stadium for Nebraska’s sea
son opener against Michigan
State, Jan wore a pin she had re
ceived in the mail.
“Today’s a rough time,” she
said at halftime. “I wanted to be
here. I wouldn’t have missed it
for anything.”
The Cornhusker football
team has dedicated its 1996 sea
son to Brook’s memory. He
graduated in December and
played an integral role in
Nebraska’s national champion
ships the past two seasons.
After highlights of his NU
career were shown on the
HuskerVision screens, the four
current senior Husker captains
talked about Brook.
Following the video, the
cameras were turned to the press
box, where Jan and Ellen Brook
waved to the sold out Memorial
Stadium crowd.
The proceeds from a memo
rial fund established in April
have helped fund schooling for
both Nicoel — who graduated
from medical school in May—
and Drue, a junior at Kansas
State.
Jan said she also has been
talking with the Goodland (Kan.)
High School football coach
about establishing a little league
program in the Berringer’s
hometown.
“We don’t have one there,”
she said as she held Ellen, who
was dressed in a red Nebraska
outfit.

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — Colo
rado Coach Rick Neuheisel won’t ever
forget the Kordell Stewart-to-Michael
Westbrook, 64-yard miracle pass that
beat Michigan two years ago.
His kids won’t let him.
Neuheisel has a plaque at home
with a picture of Westbrook’s last-play
TD catch. And every time someone
pushes a button on the plaque, a cas
sette is activated and play-by-play man
Larry Zimmer’s voice makes the dra
matic call.
“I still get goose bumps when my
little boys press the button,” Neuheisel
said this week as No. 5 Colorado (2-0)
prepares for Saturday’s game against
No. 11 Michigan (1-0) at Folsom Field
in Boulder. “My boys love it. They’ve
almost worn it out.”
Michigan Coach Lloyd Carr has
tried to sidestep the play that turned a
26-21 lead into a 27-26 loss at Ann
Arbor, Mich.
“We haven’t talked about it,” Can
said. “I don’t say that trying to be a
bad guy, but it just makes no sense for
us to look back.” -
This time, the Buffaloes are led by
Koy Detmer, who has hit on 51 of 75
passes for 618 yards and five touch
downs.
For Michigan, Scott Dreisbach
starts at quarterback. Two weeks ago,
he ran 72 yards for a score in the Wol
verines’ 20-8 win over Illinois.
“You can’t go out there and try to
trick them,” said Neuheisel. “They will
find a way to punch you out if you do
that.”

five games in Gainesville, Fla., earlier
this season, and North Carolina (5-3)
took Colorado to a fifth game before
losing to the Buffs last week.
The Huskers will make the trip
without Coach Terry Pettit, who suf
fered a knee injury Thursday morning
and has temporarily passed the coach
ing responsibilities to assistant Cathy
Noth.
Nebraska travels to North Carolina
to complete a home-and-home series
with the two teams. Thr Heel Coach Joe
Sagula is excited to have the defend
ing national champions visit Chapel
Hill.
“When you host the defending na
tional champions, it isa $sat oppor
tunity,” Sagula said. “When we play
them in Chapel Hill, it brings notori
ety to the team, the sport and the uni
versity.”
Sagula, in his seventh year at North
Carolina, finds himself at the helm of
a young, injury-riddled team.
The Thr Heels top player, senior
Amber Willey, could miss Friday’s
match with a shoulder injury. Sopho
more Alicia Alford, who has not played
in UNC’s last three matches, has a se
verely sprained ankle and will not play
tonight.
“We are making small adjustments
to play a team like Nebraska,” Sagula
said, “because we know we are facing
a team that is big and physical.”
Sagula said UNC freshmen Lib
Hobson, Tori Seibert and Shannon
Smith are seeing a lot of action. The
Tar Heels are also getting big contri
butions from sophomores Erin Berg
and Maya Starks. Berg, a setter from
Honolulu, leads North Carolina with
203 assists.
Duke Coach Linda Grensing, in her
second year, also has a young team with
three freshmen playing a large role in
the Blue Devils’ first four matches.
Duke is coming off a rough week
end Their match against Colorado was
canceled because of Hurricane Fran
before they ran into No. 3 Texas, which
swept the Blue Devils.
The Huskers head into the east
coast road trip coming off two wins
over Michigan State. Pettit said his
team is still feeling the effects of the
two wins over No. 8 MSU.
“We are playing every Friday and
Saturday night, and we are feeling fa
tigued,” he said. “We were very sore
after the Michigan State matches, and
we were still feeling the fatigue at prac
tice this week.”

-arounds had nothing to do with fiery
halftime speeches.
“First,” Walker said, “it’s our fit
ness level. We pride ourselves an be
ing the best conditioned. Also we have
depth, which means our starters are
well rested. Plus it's perseverance. We
have the will to win.”
Gay also said the Huskers never
panic.
“I think we’re more relaxed in what
we need to do,” said Gay, who has four
goals this season.
The Husker newcomers continue to
pick up the slack when the veterans are
not scoring. New players have scored
six of the Huskers’ 17 goals. Lindsay
Eddleman and Isabelle Momeau have
contributed two goals apiece, and
Jenny Benson and Sharolta Nonen
have added one goal each.
Nebraska’s offense continues to be
balanced. Eight Huskers have scored
goals and seven have assists.
