‘Hi-Fi’carries ‘Monster’ feel SCHULTE from page 9 mental variety. It’s, hard to find two songs to compare with each other on this disc. They range from the sad tale of self-exploration and defeat with “How the West was Won and Where it got Us” to “The Wake-up Bomb,” laden with fat guitar licks and a tongue in cheek, arena rock attitude. And those are only the first two songs on the disc. The album is all over the place af ter that — Stipe dabbles with spoken word lyrics backed by flamboyant elec tric guitar on “Departure” while “Leave” harnesses a techno feel revolv ing with a gritty sense of urgency. Stipe’s vocals seek to soothe the wa vering, repeating backbeat as he slowly slurs out the answers. And “Hi-Fi” reasserts R.E.M. as one of the most imaginative, talented and diverse bands of our time. Grade: B+ R.E.M. album disappointing CAPITANO from page 9 emptier lyrics than anything from that album. “New lbst Leper,” the melodic beauty of the album, triples up with “Undertow,” a nice piece of Southern rock, and “E-Bow die Letter.” The mo mentum is broken with “Leave,” which begins with a soothing little instrumen tal until Mike Mills’ “annoying sound” key apparendy gets jammed and ruins the entire song. “Departure,” “Bittersweet and Me” and “Binky the Doormat” are a few more Southern rock tunes very similar in style and lyrical content. The album winds down with “Be Mine,” a track that sounds like it could be used as a theme song for a 1980s Molly Ringwald film; “Zither.” Unfortunately, halfhearted and stale R.E.M. tunes abound on “New Adven tures in Hi-Fi.” The album lacks ex citement, unveils no surprises and fails to make me want to crank up my hi-fi stereo and sing along. Grade: C+ Dayroom at Duffy’s From Staff Reports Tuesday night at Duffy’s is go ing to be a bit special this week thanks to the Athens, Ga., grass roots band Dayroom. This self-described “rock-funk j am-pop” band not only has a good command of popular music adjec tives, but is a master of touring as well. Dayroom’s sound is strongly reminiscent of Widespread Panic, another Athens band, with a bit of the strongly composed and captivat ing jams that made Phish famous. “We (also) tend to get compared with Dave Matthews quite a bit We don’t hippie jam necessarily, but it’s hooky, no wimpy pop,” said Dave Aubrey, manager of Dayroom. The concert starts at 10:30 to night evening at Duffy’s, 1410 O St., with a $3 cover charge. The band will also be selling its albums at the show and at Homer’s locations. Dayroom “Contagious” Global Head Records Grade: B Some cities have a knack for producing good music. Seattle, Austin and Boulder come to mind, as does Athens, Ga., the home of Dayroom. Through the years, Ath ens has produced many popular college bands such as R.E.M., the B-52’s and the Indigo Girls. How ever, the Athens band that Dayroom has the most in common with is Widespread Panic. Widespread Panic and bands such as Phish, Blues Traveler and The Dave Matthews Band have all gained mainstream popularity in pasi years Decause ofncmstop tour ing and an emphasis on musical tal ent and originality. On their second album, “Conta gious,” Dayroom shows many dif ferent musical styles. The song “Contagious,” begins the album with a chaotic driving sound that comes across as almost ska. The song “New Year’s Eve” brings in a slower and more melodic groove, with much musical interplay among the four members. The best song on the album is “Cheap Wine,” which blends strong instrumental work around a sing-a long chorus. The groove continues until the song “My Way or No Way.” “My Way” is freight-train fast with loud guitars and even louder vocals. The song doesn’t really fit into the album, and it’s one that I would probably skip over if I was holding the remote. The lyrics on “Contagious” are almost as diverse as the musical style. Dayroom goes from discuss ing sex in “Come On Over” to evo lution in “Once I Was a Monkey.” They also mention the band’s fash ion ineptness in “Can’t Get with It.” Pretty interesting stuff. —Doug Weber 02 400 Roommates 05 410 Housing Wanted 10 420 Rooms/Rent 13 430 Housas/Rent 16 440 Duplex/Rent 20 450 Apartments/Rent 30 Jewelry 460 Summer Housing 40 Misc.
