“It was scary,” Walker said. “But
it’s worth it now. We didn’t let it
bother us.”
Walker said the team stayed fo
cused on the task at hand.
“We encouraged them to study
because they could not go out of the
hotel,” Walker said.
NU fell behind 1-0 in the first
half, marking the only time the
Huskers have surrendered a goal
this season. But Nebraska’s trend of
breaking games open after the in
termission continued. NU scored
three second half goals to put the
game away.
Freshman Lindsay Eddleman
scored NU’s first goal to even the
contest. Kari Uppinghouse put the
Huskers ahead to stay 10 minutes
later, and Kim Ratliffs goal put the
game out of reach.
The victory marked Nebraska’s
first-ever win against a ranked op
ponent. Walker said it was great to
defeat the Blue Devils.
“It’s a big measuring stick for
us,” he said. “But I’m not interested
in what other people think of us. I’m
only interested in the players believ
ing in themselves.”

Koy Detmer passed for two touch
downs and ran for another, and No. 5
Colorado survived an early scare to
outslug in-state rival Colaado State
48-34 Saturday night.
Backup tailback Lendon Henry
caught one of Detmer’s scoring throws
and ran for two more scores, while
starter Herchell TVoutman rushed for
184 yards.
Detmer completed 31 of 42 passes,
including 14 in a row during one stretch
in the first half, for 364 yards.
CSU’s Moses Moreno and Geoff
Turner hooked up on 37- and 38-yard
TD passes in the second half. Calvin
Branch also scored twice for the Rams,
once on a 96-yard kickoff return.
CSU (1-1) stunned Colaado (2-0)
with three big plays in taking an early
14-7 lead.
After a Colaado fumble barely two
minutes into the game, Damon Wash
ington broke loose on a 44-yard jaunt,
setting up Branch’s 5-yard scoring run
with 11:03 left in the opening quarter.
Colorado State will play Nebraska
in Lincoln on Sept 28, and CU will
visit Memorial Stadium on Nov. 29.
In other Big 12 action this week
end, Nebraska hammered Michigan
State 55-14; Texas beat New Mexico
41-7; Texas Tfech beat Oklahoma 31
3; Wyoming beat Iowa State 41-38 in
overtime; Baylor topped Louisiana
Tech 24-16, and Texas Christian de
feated Oklahoma 20-7*.
Also, Kansas State destroyed Indi
ana State 59-3 in Manhattan, Kan.
Indiana State, a Division I-AA
school, found itself in a major mis
match.
“They’re too big. They’re too
strong. They’re too fast,” Sycamores
coach Dennis Raetz said. “We could
play them from now until Christmas
and they’d still beat us.”
Brian Kavanagh threw for 232
yards and three touchdowns for Kan
sas State (2-0). Marlon Charles rushed
for 195 yards, and Kevin Lockett
caught seven passes for 140 yards.

appointing thing Saturday wasn’t the
score. It was Michigan State’s lack of
preparation for the Huskers.
■ ' Saban said he was disappointed
with the way the Spartans prepared in
practice for the game. Michigan State
opened its season with a 52-14 win
over Purdue a week earlier.
‘Tf you have highly motivated play
ers and a highly motivated team, you
get consistency in performance,”
Saban said. “I don’t think we got that.”
One reason the Spartans didn’t have
any consistency was they played 14
freshmen Saturday.
“We have to be able to get these
players to take what they did last week
and then be able to re-focus,” Saban
said. “We have a lot of young players
who went to the prom in May, then beat
Purdue last week and said, 'Hey, this
is easy.’”
The (me positive side to the game,
Saban said, was the Spartans allowed
Nebraska only 184 yards rushing.

perienced setter has been given the
huge responsibility of leading MSU
back to the NCAA Ibumament The
5-foot-8 Palvus has had problems
consistently connecting with her
i hitters.
“We have a young setter who has
never set at this level,” Erbe said.
“The hitter selection is not always
correct. The matchups we’re creat
ing are not good.”
Elbe, the AVCA 1995 coach of
the year, is quick to acknowledge
that his team’s problems go beyond
adjusting to a new setter.
Saturday’s match was a comedy
of errors for the Spartans. At times,
MSU was confused and unorga
nized, Erbe said. The Spartans, who
had problems passing the ball, ex
perienced several breakdowns in
their serve-receive and defensive
coverage.
“We’re just not passing the ball
well,” Erbe said. “That’s been our
Achilles’ heel this whole season.
When we pass, we can run our sys
tern. Wnen we don t, we re really
vulnerable.”
MSU’s front line had a difficult
time at the net. The team hit only
.125 with 29 errors. The Spartans
also hurt themselves with 13 service
errors, including four by All-Big
Ten outside hitter Jenna Wrobel.
Nebraska Coach Terry Pettit
thinks MSU will rebound from this
weekend.
“When you change one person
on a team, the chemistry is differ
ent,” Pettit said. “They are not in
trouble. If I had to bet, I would say
that MSU is still the strongest con
tender for the Big Ten title. I’m not
concerned that they won’t have a
great season.”
MSU has a week off before re
turning to action in the Cleveland
State Invite, in which the team will
play two unranked teams, Niagra
and West Virginia.
“When you perform below ex
pectations, that tends to frustrate a
team,” Erbe said. “ They know
they’re not playing consistent at a
high level. I’mjust glad this is hap
pening at the beginning of the sea
son and not the end ”
