They still pay state and federal income tax, while another portion of their pay goes to their families and savings funds, he said. Five percent is given to a victim assis tance fund. So far this year, inmates have contributed $225,0(H) to die victim assistance fund and paid $600,000 in taxes. The best asset of the program, Lincoln said, is not the money but the skills inmates learn. Seventy percent of inmates never have worked a job when they enter prison, Lincoln said. When they leave, they can better adapt to a working world. _ And while the prisoners are working, they’re not causing -trouble. “One of the worst things in prison is inmate idleness,” he said. “When they’re working eight hours a day, they’re occupied — their minds are occupied, their bodies are occupied.” Avoid parking jams; take a shuttle From Staff Reports Fans rushing to the Comhuskers’ first football game Saturday can take advantage of shuttles to and from off campus parking areas instead of try ing to jam the limited spaces near the stadium. Three new StarTran shuttles will run from downtown parking lots to Memorial Stadium. The Big Red Ex press will make stops at the Comhusker Hotel parking garage near 12th and L streets, the Carriage Park Garage near 11th and L streets, and the County-City Building parking lot at 10th and H I streets. StarTran will also pick up people at six remote locations: —Holmes Lake, 70th and Normal streets. —Southeast Community College, 8800 O St. —Kmart Super Center, 27th Street and Comhusker Highway. — Sam’s Club, 27th and Superior streets. —Gateway Mall, 6100 O St. —State Department of Roads, 14th and Burnham streets. The shuttles will stop every 20 min utes beginning two hours before kick off. Fans will pay $2 for shuttle ser vice from outlaying stops and $1 for downtown shuttles. Fans may drop pas sengers off on Avery Avenue from Sta dium Drive to 14th Street. Police are warning fens to avoid the intersection at 27th Street and Comhusker Highway because of con struction. Three two-way streets will allow one-way traffic after the game: — 10th Street from Military Road to Sun Valley Boulevard. — 14th Street from Avery Avenue to Comhusker Highway. — 8th Street from S to J streets.
