By Kimbebut Coffeen StaffReporter Polka dances, kolaches and names that seem difficult to pronounce keep the Czech influence in Nebraska, but a UNL club also works to keep the Czech culture alive for future generations. Czech culture is brought to life at UNL by the Komensky Czech club, the first club created at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The Komensky Czech Club was founded in 1903 by students Sarka Hrbokova, Otto Kotoch and Geoffrey Hrbek. Hrbek became a UNL profes sor in 1 907. TTie club has 80 active and 320 inactive members. “The club is about the preservation of the Czech-American heritage,” said Mila Sasko^-Pierce, the club’s faculty adviser. “We afso want to impress upon people that anyone who wants to learn about the Czech culture can join.” Some of the Komensky Czech Club’s inspiration comes from a town a little closer to UNL than Prague. Wilber, about 25 miles southwest of Lincoln, is known as the “Czech Capi tal of the United States.” Wilber’s capital designation is partly the result of the town's annual Czech Days festival. The festival takes place the first week of August. But Wilber isn’t alone in the festival mar ket Twenty similar festivals take place in towns across Nebraska every year. Nebraska became a popular home for people of Czech decent because of the Homestead Act, Saskova-Pierce said. Tbwns formed as people from the same countries chose to live close to each other. These communities made it easier for immigrants to preserve their culture and acclimate to Ameri can life at the same time. Over the past few years, the club has had a variety of gudst speakers, including doctoral students, professors from other Nebraska universities and Franti Weis, adviser to the president of the Czech Academy of Science. The club has also shown a number of films. Some of these films have been “An American in Prague,” “Shop on the Main Street” and “Firefighters Ball.” The club is now trying to obtain the film “Kolya.” The Komensky Czech Club’s Christmas workshop is an annual event that has proven to be popular, Saskova Pierce said. In the workshop, the mem bers learn how to make Christmas treats and ornaments. The members also receive lessons in a number of Czech traditions, she said, including predicting the future with fruits and nuts. In this practice, people examine the inside of the sliced foods to determine what the future holds. A rotten apple would bring bad news, for example, and a good apple would bring the op posite. “Last year’s workshop was such a success. Eighty members and even a television crew came to see what the success of the workshop was all about,” Saskova-Pierce said. Gretchen Mills, the club’s presi dent, said the group used several events to attract people to the festival. “Every year, we try to have polka dances, free films, and guest speakers,” she said. Another service the club provides is the Czech Newsletter “Nas Svet,” which means “Our World.” The news letter is produced on campus once ev ery two months. , The Komensky Czech Club meets pan. to 8 pm in the Nebr&fca Union. The first meeting will be Sept. 19 and will feature a guest speaker who will talk about the significance of ac cordion music in European and Czech cultures. The meetings are open to any one who wants to attend, including those not of Czech descent. “I think that more people should get involved in the club,” said Meredith Kearns, the club’s treasurer. “There are so many people in Nebraska and on campus of the Czech descent that should become more involved.” Rest Assured be Insured, NOW is the time to review your v' ^ current medical insurance and/or consider a plan to assist you with your health care needs!
