In a meeting Wednesday night that
started 15 minutes late, lasted 28 min
utes and had nearly a quarter of its
members absent, ASUN passed no new
legislation.
The Association of Students of the
University of Nebraska senate did
make accomplishments in other areas.
The senate discussed a potential
problem with last year’s Outstanding
Educator award, which was sponsored
by ASUN.
ASUN gives the award to the pro
fessor who gathers the most votes from
students choosing their “best” educa
tor on a separate ballot during ASUN
elections.
In addition to awarding Paul Kelter,
associate chemistry professor, with the
Outstanding Educator of the Year
award, ASUN also sent certificates to
all educators who received votes last
year.
Hie problem before the senate in
volves a professor who is trying to use
the cme vote he received to protect his
job.
“A professor in the chemistry de
partment who’s on rocky ground is us
ing this against the university, saying
‘I got an outstanding educator award,”’
said Academic Committee Chairman
Branson Riley.
Riley said the professor in question
only received one vote. Reiter received
45 votes.
“We’re looking at changing the pro
cess so that things like this won’t hap
pen next time,” Riley said.
In other action, a list of goals which
was generated from last year’s meet
ings and platform goals was distributed
to senate members.
ASUN President Eric Marintzer
said he hoped senators would look at
the list and make an effort to accom
plish the tasks on it.
