NU football team elects its captains By Eric Rineer StaffReporter Jared Tomich, Mike Minter, Chris Dishman and Damon Benning have been elected by the Nebraska football team as its captains for the 1996 season. In their NU careers, these four seniors have demonstrated leader ship qualities and their teammates believe they possess the experience to guide Nebraska in its quest for a third straight national title. Tomich, a first-team All America rush end, places his elec tion as a captain above all his other awards and accomplishments. “This is a lot bigger,” he said. “Those are great. They’re wonder ful, but just to have that respect is great. This is directly from the team.” Minter, a rover, seeks to lead by example. “I’m the type of guy to do it on the field and in practice,” he said. Dishman, NU’s No. 1 left guard, said he is honored to be chosen by ii I’m the type of guy to do it on the field and in practice.” Mike Minter NU rover his teammates. “The teammates respect me enough to vote for me,” said Dishman, who is from Cozad. “We all know what we have to do and have to keep the team focused.” Benning, the other offensive captain, is proud to lead the team. “I get along with a lot of the guys, and I like to pride myself in being an easy guy to talk to,” said Benning, an I-back from Omaha. Each of the captains have ma tured throughout the years, Benning said. “It’s been a process through age and also through the things that hap pened last year,” he said. Tournament win is season’s first for Husker golfers From Staff Reports The Nebraska women’s golf team fulfilled Coach Robin Krapfl’s predic tion Saturday and Sunday by winning its first tournament of the fall season. The Huskers carded rounds of 304 and 301 to win the Lady Lion Invita tional in State College, Pa. Krapfl said she thought NU would win its first two tournaments of the sea son. Nebraska will play host to the Chip-N Club Intercollegiate Monday and Tuesday at Firethom Golf Club. The team was led by junior Rachelle Thcha, who won the tourna ment individually with rounds of 73 and 74. The next highest Husker was jun ior Shirin Homecker, who was fol lowed by Gretchen Doerr, Hanne Nyquist, Denise Woodard and Melissa Becker. Kate McEwen sues Phillips KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — St. Louis Rams running back Lawrence Phillips is accused of beating, threat ening and once sexually assaulting Kate McEwen during their two-year relationship at die University, of Ne braska-Lincoln. McEwen, a former Nebraska bas ketball player, filed a civil lawsuit Aug. 16 in Jackson County (Mo.) Circuit Court. McEwen’s suit alleges a broader pattern of abuse than the September 1995 incident for which Phillips was convicted. It states that Phillips—who ran for two touchdowns in his professional debut Sunday—beat, threatened and reconciled with McEwen repeatedly' after the two started dating in August 1993. Osborne says Huskers still need work FOOTBALL from page 12 ing to prepare ourselves like we would for a game. We’re sick of talking and practicing. We want to play.” I-back Ahman Green, who rushed for 1,086 in his first season with Ne braska last year, said he felt confident that Frost will take charge on gameday and lead the Husker offense. Frost completed 3 of 6 passes Fri day for 84 yards and rushed seven times for 59 yards and two touch downs. “I feel real good about the way things are going,” Frost said, “and hopefully I seem confident out there, because I am confident. I’m really pleased with the way things are going, and I think we’re making good progress.” Note: Wingback Lance Brown, listed No. 2 on the preseason depth chart, was not listed on the chart released Monday. Brown was suspended from the spring game last April for unspecified disci plinary reasons. Reitsma leads Huskers past BYU, Lobos VOLLEY from page 12 performance with 61 assists. Sopho more Jaime Krondak led the team de fensively with 28 digs and was one short of her career best with 20kills. Megan Korver ended the match with her 10th kill of the night. Amy Steel and Helen Hjorth recorded 18 kills a piece for BYU, which fell to 0 1 on the season. The Huskers moved on to face the host New Mexico Saturday night. De spite a hostile crowd, Nebraska swept a defensively sound Lobo team 17-15, 15-9, 15-12 in what Pettit called the “best match of the year.” Nebraska exploited its height ad vantage throughout the match. The 6 4 Reitsma towered over the much smaller New Mexico front line. Reitsma set a new Nebraska record for kills in a three-game match with 28 and was named most valuable player of the tournament. Reitsma was unaware of the record until the team returned to Lincoln Sun day- - “Coach basically told Fiona to go to me and it worked,” she said. “If other teams start keying in on me, it is going to open up opportunities for the rest of the team.” Krondak, who effectively used a diagonal strike for 12 kills Saturday, joined Reitsma on the all-tournament team. j Nepo also had a good match with “Fiona really set the ball consis tently well,” Pettit said. “She made good decisions, and she served tough. I was real pleased to see that. If she doesn’t do that, we don’twin.” Friday and Saturday night, the No. 4 Huskers will play Michigan State at the NU Coliseum. The fifth-ranked Spartans, who lost to Nebraska in a national semifinal match last season, return five starters from last year’s 34 3 team. “It will be interesting to see if we can continue to improve against an exceptional opponent,” Pettit said. “BYU and New Mexico are good NCAA volleyball teams. Michigan State can win the NCAA champion ship.” PowerPC604/132MH2/I6MB RAM lX&8iCDJm/15rS&!
