Years of planning finally sprout buffalo grass on campus landscape By Pamela Storm Staff Reporter As Nebraska tries to brihg buffalo back to its prairies, UNL is bringing buffalo grass to campus. Buffalo grass is a hearty, native prairie grass. It is a tall, wild-looking and takes a long time to grow. So long, in fact, that there have even been whimsical signs ^posted by newly planted patches of buffalo grass assuring students that, yes, something will eventually sprout there. Cather Garden, near the sidewalk between Love Library and Burnett Hall, is one of the more historical ar eas with buffalo grass. The grass was _ • ~ planted five years ago, said Kim Todd, campus landscape architect. The grass takes the first season to root. By the second season, the grass starts to grow. Bud Dasenbrock, director of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Landscape Services, said the garden recognizes Nebraska author Willa Cather’s dedication, love and hard work on the prairie. Buffalo grass is roaming in other places around City Campus, including patches along 17th Street, the southeast lawn of Love Library, near the George W.
