All income from licensed products associated with the cars will go bock to UNL, Byme said. One-third of the money will go into the general scholarship fund, one third to an alumni-association scholarship fund and one-third to the Athletic Department. That promise of financial sup pert to both academic and athletic programs made Moeser a believer. “It's a beautiful thing fen: Dev to do,” the chancellor said, “and it’s going to benefit the university.” Byme wouldn’t speculate on ex actly how much the cars might bring in for UNL, but he said NASCAR-logo license sales are larger than the sales of NBA or NFL properties. “We think the numbers are go ing to be very impressive,” he said. Alberts agreed. “(NASCAR driver) Dale Earnhardt was on QVC and made just a ton of money in an hour” sell ing merchandise carrying his name and his sponsor’s logo, he said. UNL already makes $3.5 mil lion a year licensing the Husker logo and other trademarks. Bid Byrne thinks those numbers could be higher. Sales of products with Nebraska logos increase rapidly as football season approaches, Byrne said. That sales boom continues through the end of the bowl season in Janu ary. The NASCAR season begins in February. “We see this as a unique blend ... to promote year-round interest in the University of Nebraska,” he said. Alberts, who is sponsoring the ears through the Trev Alberts Foundation, is in his third year with the Indianapolis Colts of the NFL. He became a racing fan after go ing to the Indianapolis 500 when he was a rookie in Indianapolis. Byrne has been a fan for a little longer — he once worked in the pits at a track in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Although Alberts didn’t reveal how much his foundation paid for the sponsorship, he did say that other sponsors would be brought in to help. I m not funding this car by my self, the foundation is not funding this car by itself,” Alberts said. “That obviously wouldn’t be fea sible.” A NASCAR spokesman esti mated the cost of a full sponsor ship in the Winston Cup Circuit of NASCAR at $4-$5 million a year. No university funds are being used to sponsor the cars. UNL is currently trying to se cure additional sponsors for the car, but Byrne did not say whether more sponsors had been found. A spokes man for Adidas, the company that supplies the Athletic Department with shoes and apparel, said the university had contacted Adidas about co-sponso7 ship but that the company had not reached a deci sion. With UNL now a player in the stock-car racing game, it’s tough not to wonder what’s next. “I don’t want to give anything away,” Byrne said with a grin. “We’re a pretty forward-looking group of folks.” Nebraska’s entry into the NASCAR circuit car will be un veiled at the State Fair Block Party, Friday, Sept. 6 at 9 pan. - " .
