Pavelka passes for more dough MADSEN from page 14 Also stipulated in Pavelka’s dream contract was an expense agreement that would not require him to provide detailed expense vouchers. He asked for a $250,000 life in surance policy, three pairs of season tickets, and for good measure, six press and six parking passes for all home games. And so in the end, it lodes as if there was only one" love in Pavelka’s life larger than his love for the Husk ers: his love of money. It’s been said that all good things must come to an end, and this fall, that will be the case. Kent Pavelka was good. But not that good. ESPN from page 14 ESPN’s supposed intentions by Chris Anderson, NU’s sports information di rector. Anderson stud she received a let ter from Firestone requesting that Osborne do the interview. “I never saw the letter,” Osborne said. Anderson said she was assured by Firestone that the interview would fo cus on the upcoming season. However, Firestone said he never proposed or agreed to any stipulations with the interview. Firestone said any specifications to an interview would violate his journalistic integrity, and it would ruin his credibility as a jour nalist. Firestone and Osborne both said 80 to 90 percent of the interview focused on last season’s off-field legal prob lems. Nebraska’s 1995 national champi onship season was smeared by a na tional news media frenzy over Lawrence Phillips’ assault of a former girlfriend; Osborne’s decision to al low Riley Washington to practice while feeing charges of second-degree attempted murder, and Christian Peter’s disturbing the peace conviction in Kearney, where he allegedly grabbed a woman around the neck. Firestone said he also asked Osborne about his relationship with former Nebraska quarterback Brook Berringer—who died in a plane crash last spring—and about Osborne’s late father and grandfather. In August, Washington graduated and opted not to complete his final year of eligibility. Phillips also passed on his senior season, and he was drafted by the St. Louis Rams in the first round of the National Football League Draft. Peter was drafted by the New En gland Patriots but within a week, he was released. “I’m tired of talking about last year, and those players are all gone,” Osborne said. “All those questions have been answered over and over and over again.” Firestone said he found it ironic that Osborne didn’t want to talk about last season, even though his book, “On Solid Ground,” was released the same week the interview was taped. The book details many of the same situations discussed in the interview, Firestone said. “It was not my intent to be mali cious during the interview,” Firestone* said. “Coach Osborne is a very ideal istic and principled man, and I don’t think he looked bad at all during the interview.” Firestone said he knew Osborne was upset by the way the coach re moved his microphone and left the studio after the interview, which was recorded in mid-August at the HuskerVision studios in the West Sta dium. Part of the interview was tele vised earlier this month on Sportscenter’s Sunday night conver sation. i Thursday’s special also includes an interview with Florida State Coach Bobby Bowden. Firestone said he still considers Osborne a friend, but the broadcaster said the episode probably strained their relationship. “I will probably be vilified by Husker viewers who consider that I am dragging up old news,” Firestone said. “I don’t want to be the poster boy as a person who is anti-Osborne or anti Nebraska. “I know football is king in Ne braska, and it is the most important celebrated act of the state ofNebraska. I also know that many people feel that the players can do no wrong. 1 just hope they realize these were fair ques tions. I didn’t intend to be disrespect ful.” Tonight’s interview will not end questions about last year’s team, Firestone said, but he did say the com ments will probably “go away in Oc tober and November, when they are rolling along toward their third cham pionship.” Firestone said he thinks Nebraska will win an unprecedented third straight title this year. “I don’t have anything against Roy Firestone,” Osborne said, “and I don’t have any question that I haven’t an swered straight on. But I just don’t feel like I need to answer the same ones over and over again.” BUY Tier* reaffltf' is a clififcresce. pwwi iJbJttMkJv 1300 Q Street • 476-0111 emailnbookstoreOaol.com Art Department • Lower Level : ■ V: • ' "• ■ b ■ . ■ ■. • ' Buy any 3 studio size tubes of OH or Aoylic paint and get 1 large tube of Titanium White paint free.
