KU, Buffs expected to
cruise in first week.
- KNOXVILLE, Item, (AP) —
Fans of Tennessee football may be
focused on Florida, but Phillip
Fulmer, coach of the No. 2 Volun
teers, said the Tennessee players are
not — at least not with UNLV
knocking at the door.
The Rebels come to Knoxville
(Hi Saturday to open one of the most
anticipated seasons in Tennessee
history. But it seems the fans are
absorbed by things that will come
later—particularly the showdown
with Florida on Sept. 21 and quar
terback Peyton Manning’s run at
the Heisman TYophy.
“I think our team needs to be
alert,” Fulmer said Wednesday.
“It’s something they do not need
to take lightly.”
Tennessee, coming off an 11-1
season, is a prohibitive favorite for
Saturday’s 7 pjn. game. The Rebels
finished 2-9 last year, allowing 535
yards and 47 points per game.
But Fulmer said the Rebels’
new lode, particularly on defense,
makes it difficult to know what to
expect Saturday.
He said the Vols should begin
the season in reasonably good
health, with only tailback Brian
Darden (wrist) and offensive guard
Jeremy Shadrick (kidney) listed as
definitely out.
Fulmer said the only starting
spot still open is the kickoff job.
Freshman David Leaverton and
walk-ons Chris Hogue and Robert
Loudermilk are competing for it,
he said. .1

Phillips’
hearing
postponed
EL MONTE, Calif. (AP)—A pre
trial hearing for St. Louis Rams rookie
running back Lawrence Phillips,
charged with misdemeanor drunken
driving, was postponed Wednesday
until Sept 30.
Phillips, who is free on his own
recognizance, was not present
Wednesday. He was represented by his
attorney, Karen Filipi.
Phillips, 21, was arrested June 15
in Los Angeles County after police al
legedly saw him speeding in a gold
Mercedes-Benz with a flat tire. His
blood-alcohol level was about twice
California’s legal limit, authorities
said.
Phillips is on probation for assault
ing his former girlfriend while both
were students at the University of Ne
braska-Lincoln. The probation is
scheduled to end Nov. 29.
A drunken-driving conviction
could lead to the revocation of his pro
bation and possibly jail time in Ne
braska.
If convicted, Phillips could be sen
tenced to six months in jail and fined
$1,000.
Phillips, who was picked sixth
overall in the National Football
League draft in April.
