In the final SWC game against Texas A&M, Brown played with a severely sprained ankle. UT won 16-6, earning the team a Sugar Bowl invitation. Against the Aggies, he completed 12 passes for 147 yards and (me touchdown. “James played as gutsy of a brand of football last year as I can remember,” Mackovic said. “There wasn't a time when he played 100 percent. The game he played against Texas A&M was just a re markable amount of courage." In addition to Brown, the of fense returns with a wealth of ex perience. Behind Brown in the backfield are Shon Mitchell and Ricky Will iams. The Williams-Mitchell tan dem rushed for a total of 2,089 yards and 18 touchdowns a year ago. Brown has an impressive wide receiver to throw to in Mike Adams. Adams is Texas’ all-time leading receiver with 2,090 yards. Tight end Pat Fitzgerald, a second team All-American, also returns. The only concern is the offen sive line, where just two starters return. All-American right guard Dan Neil, who is a candidate for the Outland TYophy, will anchor the group. Defensively, the line position is the least experienced of die team. Two of three starters are gone with only nose guard Chris Akins re turning. Four incoming freshmen may see a great amount of playing time. Tyson King and Kyle Richardson return at the inside linebacker spot, but the two start ers at outside linebacker are gone. The secondary is the most ex perienced part of the team. Bryant Westbrook, Taje Allen, Chris Carter and TYe Thomas, all seniors, have combined to start 93 games. Texas will rely upon these four to shoulder the defensive leadership. “It’s difficult to put that kind of burden on them, but we just don’t have any other choice,” Mackovic said. If everything can come together for Texas, it may be cm the field representing the southern division in the Big 12’s championship game, Dec. 7 in St. Louis. “It’s a reward for all the hard work that we put in throughout the season,” Akins said. “It would be a great contest with two great teams.” Brown jumps to top spot at comerback BtGbegg Madsen Staff Reporter True freshman Ralph Brown moved into the No. 1 spot on the NU depth chart at right comerback. The 5-foot-ll, 170-pound Brown, from Hacienda Heights, Calif., is listed ahead of junior Leslie Dennis and senior Dave Alderman. “Ralph has shown a lot of matu rity, poise and confidence,” Coach Tom Osborne said. “But this doesn’t mean much, really. Nothing is settled there.” Senior Mike Fullman, who injured his groin in spring practice and was held out of two-a-day workouts this month, returned to practice Monday. Osborne said he was encouraged by Fullman’s workout, and the coach said he hoped to see Fullman — who en tered fall camp as the top right comerback — back to full speed by the first or second game of the sea son. Junior tight end Tim Carpenter, who has been recovering from a tom anterior cruciate ligament, also re turned to practice Monday. Senior split end Brendan Holbein (hamstring) and junior tight end Vershan Jackson (sprained ankle) also went through light workouts Monday. If you have to take notes, as least do it with some excitement. : " • ‘ T”"*'7".
