    Freight train strikes, kills boy
southeast of Lincoln Saturday
HICKMAN (AP) — A 17-year-old Lin
coln boy was struck and killed while trying
to run in front of a freight train early Satur
day morning, Lancaster County sheriffs said.
Brandon L. Brown was one of seven boys
walking along the railroad tracks about 1:30
a.m. in Hickman, about eight miles southeast
of Lincoln.
The engineer reported that he saw four of
the youths running along the tracks ahead of
the train. The engineer said three of the youths
jumped clear when he sounded the whistle
and applied the brakes.
Brown continued to run on the tracks and
was struck by the train, which linked 73
freight cars and four engines. The others,
whose ages ranged from 15 to 19, were not
injured.
The lights, brakes and whistle were all
functioning properly, railroad officials said.
Brown was transported from the scene by
air ambulance and was pronounced dead at
Lincoln General Hospital.
Hickman Fire Chief Stan Draper said
Brown was conscious and could talk when
emergency medical personnel arrived.
“He had several broken bones,” Draper
said. “He was definitely in critical condition
when he left the scene here.”
The Hickman city park is supposed to be
closed after dark, but Drajser said that kids
liked to go there because it'is secluded. The
remaining six teens were all charged with
trespassing.
There was no indication whether drink
ing or drugs were involved in the incident.
