Marching madness Jay Calderon/DN MEMBERS OF the UNL Marching Band practice for the upcoming football season at Memorial Stadium Tuesday evening. Permits sell out fast, parking woes continue By Erin Schulte Senior Reporter Guess what? There are more park ing problems at UNL. The university has already sold out of commuter lot permits for students who live off-campus, and today is the first day permits go on sale for those who didn’t pre-order or renew. What the university has left to sell is 1,100 permits for perimeter parking, formerly known as remote parking. Tad McDowell, parking services man ager, explained the change. “They’re not halfway to Waverly or anything,” McDowell said. “It’s just a better connotation to use.” Students can take the perimeter op tion, or join 1,200 people on a waiting list for commuter permits. A phone in registration system called NUPark, which is similar to the phone-in regis tration NRoll, is one of the reasons permits sold out early this year. More people renewed by phone rather than waiting until school started. “It gave us the opportunity to sell the permits earlier and beat some of the rush around returning to school,” McDowell said. “We run out every year, we just reached this point earlier because of NUPark.” The computerized system took six months to hook up and cost less than Get a house close to campus and buy a bike, or find some one with a sticker and car pool.” Jason Bynum ASUN vice-president $10,000, McDowell said. Because of employee time saved on data entry, the system should pay for itself in a year or two, he said. Students without permits can come to Kimball Hall starting Thursday to try to get a permit. They should bring money in the form of cash, check or credit card, student identification and license plate number. McDowell said students shouldn’t panic if they don’t have a permit yet. Those wanting commuter permits are put on a waiting list, and more spots usually open up in September. “It usually works out to where ev erybody gets something,” McDowell said.
