Costner’s ‘Tin Cup’ overfloweth
with real raucousness, romance
By Gerry Beltz
Film Critic
*■'/*-*>
A hint to Kevin Costner:
Your smaller, humanistic film*
(“Bull Durham” and now “Tin Cup”'
have a wide range of appeal and make
oodles of bucks, while your epic-style
films (“Waterworld,” “Wyatt Earp,’
etc.) languish at the box office and are
generally slammed by the critic:
(“Dances With Wolves” being a verj
notable exception).
The hint? Keep your feet on the
ground, and that’s just what you do ir
“Tin Cup.”
It also lexiks like part of your sue
cess lies in working with director Roi
Shelton, probably the one movie di
rector you haven’t pissed off yet.
Roy “Tin Cup” McAvoy (Costner
is a beer-guzzling golf instructor wit!
his green located in the middle of ai
Arizona dust bowl. Living in a run
down Winnebago, he spouts off witl
golf philosophy at the drop of a hat.
He could have gone pro, but alwayi
goes for the wild, crowd-pleasing sho
instead of the playing-the-percentagei
shot, and thus, lost out on the bij
game.
(By the way, McAvoy got his “Til
Cup” nickname because of... nah, jus
see the movie.)
Everything changes when Dr
The Facts
. Film: “Tin Cup”
Stars: Kevin Costner, Rene Russo,
; Don Johnson, Cheech Marin
i Director: Ron Shelton -
Rating: R (language, brief nudity)
; Grade: B
Five Words: Golf film shoots imder
; par
: Molly Griswold (Rene Russo) tees up
i for some lessons — and steals
McAvoy’s heart.
His flirtatious advances are met
i with befuddled resistance from the
- good doctor, and things get downright
sticky when her boyfriend turns out
I to be McAvoy’s longtime nemesis —
i and former golf partner — David
[ Simms (Don Johnson).
McAvoy refuses to quit, and
i Griswold’s resistance begins to
weaken. He convinces himself that the
5 best way to fix everything would be tc
t win the U.S. Open, the most difficult
j — and prestigious—golf toumamenl
l in the world.
The ending of this film is actually
i not visible from the opening credits
t onward, and there’s enough going or
between the beginning and the U.S
. Open to keep the audience entertained
One scene of special interest:
McAvoy plays a round of golf using
gardening tools and a baseball bat
(since his clubs are in the pawn shop).
McAvoy can go from philosopher
to immature womanizer in the same
breath, and still not lose that certain
charisma which draws people to him.
Costner makes the character lovable,
and never fails in keeping the role of
the underdog firmly implanted in his
performance.
Russo is very enjoyable as the mu
tual love interest, but her role lacks
strength. Also, for a shrink, she seems
easily flustered. Oh well, whatever the
script asks for...
The real treat of the “Tin Cup”
comes in the form of Cheech Marin.
He is McAvoy’s caddy, golf coach and
— most importantly — adviser of
amour.
While equal ground is covered in
romance and comedy, the film runs
just a wee too long. At a running time
of 130 minqtes, there’s about 15 min
utes scattered throughout the film
which could have been cut.
Also hurting the film is the exces
sive profanity. We’re not talking ev
ery other word being an expletive, but
there’s more swearing here than is re
ally necessary.
Still, everything comes together
very well, and “Tin Cup” is a very
heart-warming film to see.
