r rom alternative to adult easy listening, local radio stations alter music formats By Ann Stack Senior Reporter A lot can change in three months, and the radio waves are no exception to that rule. If you’re just getting back to Lin coln or are new to the city, you might be surprised by what you hear. Several Lincoln and Omaha radio stations have undergone format changes. KKNB 104.1-FM, the Planet, is now KRRK104.1 -FM, the Point. TTiat company also owns the former KRRK 93.3-FM K-Rock, which is also known as “the Point.” Listeners can expect a modem rock/adult contemporary for mat, with more Melissa Etheridge and Hootie and the Blowfish and less Marilyn Manson. KLDZ 95.1-FM changed its format last spring from the Billboard Top 40 hits of 1970-79 to adult rock. The sta tion is now KNET 95.1-FM, the Net. The Net’s play list is a potpourri of .* music from bands like Bush, Stone Temple Pilots, Aerosmith, Presidents of the United States of America, Bryan Adams, AC/DC, Candlebox. The show is broadcast live from New York via satellite, according to Randy Robbins, operations manager for Three Eagles Communications, the company that owns the Net. “From 6 to 10, this is the most bi zarre radio you’ll ever hear,” Robbins said. “He deals with topical stuff, he’s not afraid to attack anyone out there. There’s not even a radio definition for him vet.” Country-western station KFGE, Froggy 105.3-FM, switched frequency to 98.1-FM and was replaced by KKUL, Kool 105.3-FM, which has a ’50s and ’60s “oldies” format. Another new radio station making waves is Iowa Western Community College’s KIWR 89.7-FM, the River. The station has an adult album alter native format and plays music from groups such as Someday Mission, Hootie and the Blowfish, Tom Petty add the Heartbreakers and Blue Moon Ghetto. And not to be forgotten is UNL’s . KRNU, 90.3-FM. The station is oper l-— ait/U uy uiuauv/Oduug aiuuciua-wiiu play whatever they want — and it sticks to a basic alternative rock for mat. Other radio stations, according to category, include: • Country-western: KZKX 96.9 FM, 96 Kix; and KXKT 103.7-FM, the Kat, of Omaha. • Top 40: KFRX 102.7-FM and KQKQ 98.5-FM, Sweet 98, of Omaha. • Classic rock: KTGL 92.9-FM, the Eagle; KEZO 92.3-FM, Z-92; and KKCD 105.9-FM, CD-105, of Omaha. • Heavy Metal: KIBZ 106.3-FM, the Blaze. • Modem/altemative rock: KGDE 101.9-FM, the Edge. • Light rock: KEZG Star 107.3-FM and KEFM 96.1-FM, Lite 96, of Omaha. • Classical/news/jazz: Nebraska Public Radio KUCV 90.9-FM. • On the AM dial, there’s KFOR 1240-AM, an adult contemporary news/weather station, and KLIN 1400-AM, a talk-news station that fea tures Rush Limbaugh’s program, < among others.
