Art houses are usually the place to find underground movies; but because Lin coln doesn’t have any art houses, the Ross picks up the slack. This allows the theater to fill a niche with films that otherwise wouldn’t run in Lincoln. These in clude first-run foreign films, docu mentaries, experimental films, the classics and imported films. But don’t let the lack of blockbust ers scare you away. Ladely said the movies offered this semester should appeal to a wide audience. A good example is the movie “Wel come to the Dollhouse,” which opens Tuesday, starting the season. The film won the Best Picture Award at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, one of the country’s most prestigious film awards. Billed as a dark comedy, it docu ments adolescent hell in suburban New Jersey. The main character, Dawn Wiener, sounds like a close cousin to Jan Brady — without the bell-bottoms or the happy Brady end ing. Although the cartoon trailer at most movie theaters is dead, Ladely is determined to keep it alive. “The Abductees,” an 11-minute cartoon to run before “Welcome to the Dollhouse,”* describes an alien en counter. “How to Make Love to a Woman,” a five-minute animation, will run before “The Young Poisoner’s Handbook,” which will be shown Sept. 12 through Sept. 21. While Hollywood is abuzz with talk of Matthew McConaughey, best known for his work in “Dazed and Confused” and, more recently, John Grisham’s “A Time to Kill,” the Ross will show this actor’s latest work in January. “Lone Star,” a murder mys tery reminiscent of the old west, will run Jan. 2 through Jan. 12. Wrapping up the season, two films by Barbara Hammer address the les bian and gay community. “Nitrate Kisses,” a documentary, follows the relationships between four gay and lesbian couples. “Tender Fictions,” an autobiography, describes Hammer’s sexual and political maturation from childhood to adulthood.
