Tanna Kinnaman/DN SOPHOMORE OUTSIDE HITTER Megan Korver transferred to Nebraska from George Washington this fall. She is the first transfer in the history of NU volleyball. Young volleyball team counts on four freshmen, 1 transfer By Trevor Parks Senior Reporter Buying a program at a Nebraska volleyball match this season will be a learning experience. Of the team’s 12 available players, five have never played a match in a Comhusker uniform. That roster in cludes three true freshmen, one redshirt freshman and a sophomore transfer. Nine freshmen and sophomores dot Nebraska’s 12-player lineup, a far cry from last season’s senior-driven team. “I don’t think we’re ever going to have to apologize for being young or inexperienced,” Coach Terry Pettit said. “These kids came here to be good.” The group of newcomers are: Mandy Monson, a 6-foot outside hit ter from Wallace; Tonia Tauke, a 6-3 middle blocker from Council Bluffs; Katie Jahnke, a 6-foot outside hitter from West Bend, Wis.; Megan Korver a 6-1 middle blocker from Adams and Kim Crandall, a 5-7 setter from Papillion . Jahnke tore the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee in June. She is out for the season. Korver, who transferred from George Washington—where she was the 1995 Colonial Athletic Conference newcomer of the year—should make an impact because of Jen McFadden’s absence. McFadden’s career is over because of a back injury. Lisa Avery redshirted last season and should see playing time. Avery, a 6-1 middle blocker from Overland Park, Kan., was a member of last year’s top-ranked recruiting class. Before the season, she tore an ACL and did not play. Denise Koziol, a 5-11 outside hit ter from Norfolk, redshirted last sea son, but Saturday night during an intrasquad scrimmage, she suffered a season-ending knee injury. Despite the inexperience, Monson said, the young group is excited to help defend a national title. “It is kind of a privilege to be here,” Monson said. Tauke said this new class does not have the pressure of last season’s new comers — Fiona Nepo, Renee Saunders and Jaime Krondak. There will be pressure, however, to learn the Nebraska system soon, Monson said. “We are going to get thrown into everything right away, and I like that,” Monson said. “We have to soak up a lot of information really quick, so we are going to have to be quick learn ers.” Pettit told Tauke to expect to play a lot.
