Huskers hoping to be in St. Louis for championship By Trevor Parks Staff Writer ST. LOUIS — With the first fall practice iust 15 days away, the Ne braska football team has already fielded questions about winning a third straight na tional title. “No team is go ing to aim low,” Coach Tom Osborne said at the Big 12’s first football media day last Thursday. “We have enough athletes that if things go right we can wih it all. We are taking the attitude that we have as good of a chance as anybody.’' Osborne was among ten head coaches, two assistants—Colorado’s Karl Dorrell and Kansas’ Mike Hankwitz — and numerous players conducting interviews at the first offi cial Big 12 event held at the Trans World Dome in St. Louis. The Trans World Dome is the site of the first Big 12 Championship game Dec. 7, a game the Comhuskers would like to take part in. Jared Tomich said he could imag ine a big crowd when he walked into the dome for the first time. “Every game we play like that is always exciting,” Tomich said. “In December we always beat on each other a lot and it gets kind of monoto nous. A game like this will make us a better team.” If Nebraska improved anymore, that Championship game might be scary. Coming off a 62-24 win over Florida in the Fiesta Bowl, the Husk ers enter the season on a 25-game winning streak and have a 36-1 record in the last three seasons. Not since 1992 have they lost a confer ence game. Of course that was in the Big Eight. However everyone knows one key to keeping that success is quarterback Scott Frost. Frost takes over for 3 1/2 year starter Tommie Frazier, and both Tomich and Osborne know a lot of pressure will fall on Frost’s shoul ders. “The big question is quarterback,” Osborne said. “We’ve lost two great players, but we are in about as good of shape as we could be considering that.” Frost has had a year-and-a-half to learn the Nebraska offensive system after transferring from Stanford in January 1995. He started two games at Stanford in 1994 and has played in two Ne braska Red-White Spring Games, but he hasn’t taken a live snap since play ing for the Cardinals in November 1994. Tomich knows that filling Frazier’s shoes will be almost impossible. “Scott’s going to have a hard time being compared with Tommie,” Tomich said. “Mentally he’s very strong, but it might take him a couple of games to adjust.” NOTE: • As of late last week, 7,000 upper deck tickets remained for the Big 12 Championship game. When Consumers Digest named the Oldsmobile Achieva "A Best Buy," it seems they were right on the money. And here's proof. The Achieva comes loaded with standard features you would hope to find (but cant always) in a car of its class, such as air conditioning and anti-lock brakes. In addition, its DOHC engine serves up 150hp without sacrificing on fuel economy (EPA est. MPG 22 city / 33 hwy). Achieva also offers a PassLock anti-theft system and battery run-down protection, as well as dual air bags and daytime running lamps for safety. Again, all standard. Consumers Digest may call it‘A Best Buy,' but we invite you to come in and see for yourself. Williamson has sold more new Oldsmobiles in Nebraska than any other dealer.
