Two years ago, a group of journalists came out shaking. This go-around, they said they were not as affected as they thought they would be. Page 6 On the ground: Protesters lined up on both sides of the fence, but once again, the death penalty proponents were louder and larger in numbers. And again, the death penalty proponents chanted, waved signs, threw things and two were arrested. Page 5 Hopes and prayers: Death penalty opponents gathered for a prayer vigil before Joubert was executed. Page 8 Column: Editor Matthew Waite writes that death penalty supporters ignore the gravity of an execution. Page 2 Other coverage on pages 9 and 10 Demeanor of crowd ignores gravity of situation Because of my job, I have found it harder and harder to respect people in general. Individuals who are deserv ing, yes, but mankind in general, no. Now that’s not to say I have be come a crossbreed of a New York cab driver and a drunk-and-cussing sailor. My momma raised me better than that. But for the second time in two years, I was a member of the media for an execution in this state. And for the second time in two years, I was sick ened. It wasn’t supposed to be this way. But there I was, stuck in the fray. I sat outside the penitentiary for about an hour before I was allowed into the building. In that time, I saw enough to make me sick. In this country, it is acceptable — encouraged even — to express your views and let everyone know where you stand on an issue. Peaceful as sembly is protected in the constitu tion. However, like all things, there is a limit. It’s the old “Your right to swing your arm ends where my face begins” test. If someone wants to tell the world that they support the death penalty, fine. Go ahead. But Tuesday night was not express ing support. It was hate. Maybe my first clue was the man who started out his TV interview with the words “that cocksucker.” He was carrying a sign that said “Joubert fin ger fries. Limit 10. Serving 12:05 a.m.” Or maybe it was the man who was carrying a sign that said “Joubert Frys, ■—nl LAST CHANCE TO SEE Lost in Yonkers A Pulitzer Prize Winner by Neil Simon On Howell Theatre Stage, 12th & R Streets through SATURDAY OPENING WEDNESDAY IN THE JOHNNY CARSON THEATER Alan Aykbourn's witty look at family relationships Table Manners July 24 - August 3_ The Young Rep Company presents Nicky Silver's Absurdist Black Comedy PTERODACtyLS July 18,19,20,21 8:00 p.m. smdto^egre^^hdJto^^fflpleBulMIngoiah&R^ Matthew Waite Bjorklund Crys.” Spelling aside, the young man told everyone within ear shot that the state should let Joubert outside so the public could dismember him.' But, to credit the penitentiary staff, the state patrol, the Lincoln Police Department and the Lancaster County Sheriffs office, this execution was better than Otey. Protesters were a good 15 feet from each other. People weren’t as drunk and ob noxious as they were during Otey. But that’s not saying much. They were still drunk and still obnoxious. Gov. Ben Nelson, in a press confer ence before the execution, tried to hold back the tide. He told reporters in the entrance of the Governor’s mansion that he hoped people would stay home. Nice try. I suppose it is curiosity that brings some out. l imagine u was uie images of the last execution that brought oth ers. But no one made them chant. The taking of a life is a very grave issue, whether done by a criminal or by the state. It does not warrant chants, hate and slurs. The death penalty is the law of the state. When it is carried out, it de mands reflection and remorse on the part of every citizen in this state that another life had to be taken in order for the law to be upheld. It does not warrant what Nebras kans have done during both execu tions these last two years. Waite is a senior news-editorial major and DN Summer Editor. MOVIES ON THE GREEN RESCHEDULED!!!
