Lincoln native returns to Rep By Heidi White Staff Writer From the time she was a little girl, Harley Jane Kozak wanted to be an actress. . Although she *Avas in a play as a r child, Kozak got her real start in acting in ninth grade at Lincoln East High School. “It was more a compulsion than a decision (to act),” she said. zaK s young aci career contin H ued with perfor mances at the Lin coln Community Playhouse and the Nebraska Repertory Theatre. After three semesters at UNL, she moved to New York City where she studied at the New York University School of the Arts. Since then, Kozak has starred in nine feature films, including “Parent hood,” “Arachnophobia,” “Necessary Roughness” and “Side Out.” She has also acted in five made for-TV movies, four television series, three soap operas and has been in more than 40 plays. Kozak has returned to Lincoln from her home in Los Angeles to perform at the Nebraska Repertory Theatre for a fourth season. She stars in the play “Lost in Yonkers,” which opened last night. This play is about a Jewish family Mami Speck/DN Bella, played by Harley Jane Kozak, attempts to explain her secret romance to the rest of the family at rehearsal Tuesday afternoon. “Lost in Younkers,” as performed by the Nebraska Repertory Theatre, opened July 10 and will run through July 20th at the Howell Theatre. living in Yonkers in the 1940’s. “It’s a comedy with the recogniz able dysfunctions of every family, just in a different time and place,” Kozak said. In the story, two brothers are sent by their father to live with their grand mother and their Aunt Bella when their mother dies. The father then be comes a traveling salesman in order to pay for the medical bills. Aunt Bella, the character played by Kozak, is “a few sandwiches short of a picnic,” she said. Kozak’s character is a 35-year-old woman who works in the family sweat shop and still lives with her parents. She is thought to be a “spinster” by her nephews, who also refer to her as being “closed for repairs.” “There’s something a little bit off about her to give more freedom to act in ways we don’t usually get to as adults,” Kozak said. The play, which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1991, was directed by Constance McCord and written by Neil Simon.
