Closure or revenge?
Whenever the execution of a mur
derer appears imminent, we tend to
hear many enthused supporters sue
gest that, at long last, there will be
^ “closure” for the victim’s fam
|P\ ily members, and that they
wm nnaiiy be able to get
on with their lives.”
I often find myself won
dering what this is sup
posed to mean in concrete
I terms. Does such “clo
sure” come in the form of
a warm feeling inside, at
the thought of the termina
tion or some morally mis
guided individual’s life? Does it
come in the form of satisfaction in the
knowledge that now the members of
someone else’s family will be mourn
ing the loss of a loved one?
And in what sense, exactly, is “get
ting on with one’s life” impeded so
long as an incarcerated killer is still
drawing breaths somewhere in the
recesses of the state penitentiary?
Fortunately, I’ve never had a loved
one murdered; but were I psychologi
cally unable, in such circumstances,
to live my life comfortably without a
further spilling of blood, I like to think
that I would seek some sort of coun
seling rather than seeking another
person’s death.
