gible for affirmative action,” Duncan
said. “White Appalachian coal min
ers’ children should be.”
The double standards created in
situations such as admissions standards
for minorities also create additional
racial tension, Duncan said.
But Anna Shavers, associate pro
fessor of law, said she knew about
affirmative action both because of her
legal background and her personal life.
“I live the racial issues,” Shavers
said.
When she was growing up in Little
Rock, Ark., she said she was forced to
sit on the back of the bus, drink from
separate fountains and take psycho
logical tests to get into “white” schools.
Affirmative action should remain
legal because of events like those, she
said, and should act as a repayment for
injuries incurred.
Vice Chancellor for Student Af
fairs James Griesen agreed.
“One who inflicts damages on an
other unjustly should have to pay for
those damages,” Griesen said. “I can
not think of anything that deserves
more corrective action than what we
have done to Native Americans and
African Americans.”
Universities have a special obliga
tion to recruit minority students and
staff, Griesen said. Providing role
models for minority students is impor
tant.
But usingaffirmative action doesn’t
only benefit minorities, Griesen said.
“We need to teach students how to
work in a multicultural society,”
Griesen said. “You can’t do that by
having an isolated, whitewall on cam
pus.”
Postal Service honors NU
From Staff Reports
Despite the cancellation of the
“Night of Champions” celebration
April 19, the Postal Service will
still offer commemorative postcards
and postmarks.
The celebration last Friday was
canceled after former NU quarter
back Brook Beijinger’s death.
Proceeds will go to the Brook
Berringer Memorial Fund.
The postcards and postmarks
will be available at the Main Post
Office in downtown Lincoln from
April 29 to May 3,11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
They are also available through
mail until May 19. Cards are $1
each, and checks should be made
out to “Lincoln Postmaster.”
All requests must include a
stamped envelope or postcard bear
ing the proper first-class postage.
Requests should specify a prefer
ence for volleyball or football.
